Hi.My 1969 434 international diesle,is very hard to get into gear(any gear),at first startup.I have to "force"it into gear, with a grinding noise,,and after that i can work it all day with smooth shifting.Shut it down,,and then wait a bit,and start her up,,same thing,,cant get her ito gear.I tryed this with the clutch halfway down, and all the way down,,,,still no differance. The hi-low wont engage, till after you are using it a bit, then it will work smoothly.Someone here told me that it was the "pilot bearing"..and that there was an insprection plate that i could get to the adjustment, and see the throwout bearing.Where is this inspection plate located? As i say,,the tractor shifts hard,,when first start..then after i force into gear,it will work smooth as silk ,,till the next time i start her up.Can i adjust the clutch?..Would that help?.Is there "quick" fix,for now, till warmer weather sets in and i can tear her down?..... .Thanks..GW

The inspection plate is underneath the clutch housing, Get under the clutch housing and look straight up. 4 bolts is all and it comes right off.

Thanks.Ill check it out.Today i started it up as usual.Put it in gear,,and of course i had to force it in gear.I used it a while,,then shut it off.I started it up after a while..let it idle for about 15 minutes..... and it shifted smooth,,no grinding. Why does it not grind, after letting it idel, for a while, and warm up?Would the oil be too heavy? This is strange....ill look at the inspection plate,,Thanks again,GW.

Your problem could be caused by thick oil. I am not entirely certain but I believe that your tractor should have HYtran type of oil in it. Pretty thin stuff, about 25 W or so. Do the hydraulics work ok on it ?
