dump truck hydraulic lift problem

My '86 GMC dump truck bed will not stay in the up position while dumping. It lifts fine, but drifts down unless you keep stick back. I had to fabricate a vented reservoir filler plug with a black iron fitting and a small piece of soft plastic line(from soft plug hearing protection) because NOBODY sells the right part. That small piece of plastic line(approximately 1/16" thick by 1" long) eventually fell in the reservoir. I think this ultimately caused the problem, but where do you look and how do you fix? Thanks fo any help.

Where did you check for a vented cap? You should have a breather element in side that. Do you have a 2 or 3 line system? Do you run a return line filter?

I appreciate all the advice/suggestions you guys offered. When the weather permits I will definitely block the bed and scrape all the rustproof off the pump and hopefully identify the type I have. I've tried everywhere I could think of to locate the proper breather/filler cap. I don't know much about hydraulics, but I have a feeling that piece of plastic line that fell into the reservoir has lodged in the hoist spool. Thanks for the help...waiting for warmer weather to build a garage so I can do these projects in the winter.

How large of a dump truck is this? There are "dump pumps" made for dump trucks. However ther have been the standard sizes for larger class 7 & 8 trucks and also smaller dump pumps for smaller dump pumps. Is this pump mounted directly to the PTO on the truck? If so with 2 or 4 bolts?

What brand of dump pump do you have? Also if you tell me that tell me a model if it is not a common 101 or 102 pump.

install a shut off valve in the line to the cylinder.raise the bed and then shut off the valve.if the bed still leaks down, the cylinder seals are leaking.if it stays up,repair the control valve at the pump

And for goodness sake block up that bed BEFORE you work under it.
