Hi everyone... Just need a few suggestions. I have been collecting toy tractors with my 4 children for about 13 years, more so since their dad died 4 yrs. ago. I am in an online (distance learning) nursing program and I am taking a Speech course this semester. I am doing an informative speech about collecting toy tractors and I need your input if you have time...

If you had never considered collecting toy tractors, what would get your attention?

In your experience, how do collections appreciate in value?

What is your favorite toy tractor manufacturer~ why?

etc. etc. etc. :)

Any relevant info. would be greatly appreciated. I don"t hate anything in life except public speaking...so, if you don"t have time to share in the forum, at least pray for me like you"re begging for rain!

Thanks much for your time~ Heidi

I never had the toy tractors I wanted as a kid cause my parents wouldn't spend the money to buy them(said they were too expensive and were not something I really needed). So when I got old enough to buy what I wanted I started collecting and restoring the ones I never did get as a child. The age has a lot to do with the value of a toy tractor but the quanity produced of a particular tractor can be a major factor in the price also.I liked the stories behind some of my toys about who played with them and how old they are.One for instance came from a house in New Orleans that a guy was cleaning out the attic of an elderly Creole lady and found it.I later bought the tractor for a little pocket change. It had wooden wheels and a man on the seat.It ended up being a Hubley that was made in the twenties.I didn't really like it but the story told to me about where the tractor came from was interesting,he was telling me about what all she had up there in that attic and how dusty everything was.I was always an Ertl fan but wouldn't mind having some of them ESKA pedal tractors sitting in my possession.Good luck,Jack(TN).

Heidi,

I kinda fell into toy tractors backwards. 'Bout all I played with as a kid. I've always loved them. I couldn't bear to throw away some of ours when we re-discovered them a few years back as we cleaned out a shed at mommas. I took them home and put them in another shed - to keep.

I stumbled across a toy tractor parts catalog later and decided to dig the toys back out and try my hand at rebuilding them. I think that was in 1998.

Now I have a small shop setup at home to work on toy tractors and implements. I usually re-do 5 or 6 a year. I'm trying to finish up 10 for a show next weekend. All these are for local collectors. I may have a dozen in my collection. My brother has a small collection also. Him and I have gotton involved with starting a statewide club and in putting on the Starkville, Mississippi Toy Show.

I have a ball repairing them. I am trying real hard not to collect (ain't doing too good of a job lately).

I post reguarly on ToyTalk and have met a pile of good folks involved in the hobby. I've even traded parts with ol' Indydirtfarmer!

I just LIKE tractors. Toy ones are a little cheaper to play with.

Mitch

I have many of the toys my brother and I had as kids which are 90% farm toys from the 40s. Toys were hard to get then because of the war. Since then I've collected many models of farm toys that represented the equipment we owned or used in our neighborhood. That included JD, Allis, Farmall, MH, Fordson, Ford, New Holland. My favorite among favorites is a New Holland model 77 hay baler, 1/16 scale, scratch built by Gilson Reicke. Everything works on it except tne knotter. Another favorite is an AC 1/12 scale combine by Franklin Mint. The straw racks work! I got the last ERTL Precision Classics JD A on rubber with mounted 2 row cultivator that the local dealer had. Paid $119. I've heard of them going at auction for about $895. (The Precision Classics by ERTL are discontinued after a time and then it's strictly supply and demand). These are just personal notes on the subject and I don't know if it helps. What I would do is try to get some of the models your audience might be interested in on display. Maybe someone here would be interested in helping if they lived close by. Good Luck!

I'm not a toy collector, but I have some interest. What I have purchased is mainly precision toys, but some nonprecision, that replicate actual equipment I (or my family) have owned, own or have equipment I have used or use. Mainly, I purchase model toys of equipment from my youth. I tell & show my children of stories of family members doing something or getting hurt, etc.... I guess just reminiscence about when the work was fun.

I'm a little more than a fan of collecting farm toys. I'm obsessed with them. Over the years, I've owned around 1500 toys. A few years ago, I thinned the collection to just "my favorites". I've added some since. Current total is 349 tractors and 155 implements. All but 2 are John Deeres.

Recent years have seen the #1 manufacturer, Ertl, sell to Racing Champions. They have increased detail to the point some of todays toys look almost real.

Here is a link to a website that is exclusively about toy tractor collecting. www.talk.newagtalk.com Then click on "ToyTalk". If you can raise him, Bill Walters of Ertl/Racing Champions is on there quite a bit. He knows the industry first hand. Also, look for Matt Hasert. He runs the site. They will be most helpfull.

Also, try Toyfarmer.com That is the magazine of choice for most farm toy collectors.

I hope this helps. If not, post again, I'll see if I can dig up any more nfo.

Also, where are you located. I know farm toy collectors and dealers all over the U.S. I might be able to direct you to some of them for more help.

Good Luck! John

Public speaking? Not for me either. The all time best manufacturer of scale model farm toys in my opinion has got to be ERTL. Probably the only toys they currently make that will escalate in value would be the precision models. I really don't think the general run versions will increase in value, but if those are kept in good condition, they will not lose value either. Now, if you could be lucky enough to find some of the OLD farm toys, such as those manufactured by the ARCADE co., then you might just be sitting on a gold mine. I wish you the best of luck in your studies, and you are to be commended for taking the initiative to do this.
