Does either one of devices shoot an object hooked to a wire at the victim or is it just electric current like lightning passing through the air. To settle a discussion. Thanks.

A stun gun is the handheld device that shocks like a cattle prod. A Taser shoots a pair of darts with two wires for a short distance to electrically connect the target to the high voltage generator in the "gun"

Hope this helps

A Taser shoots a pair of hooked points that are attached to a wire... then the officer can control the jolts. One Police Dept. here requires officers to be subjected to one , before they are certified to carry one..... Same way with tear Gas...

I haven't seen them do the Taser, but here in Richland County (SC) the sheriff's dept. did that training with the Mace. I was watching the local news when they showed the Sheriff go first. He looked totally miserable. Wm

The idea of this is to make the officer (street cop, desk cop, jail guards, ect) aware of what the device does in various stiuations and what to expect when it is used in the wrong enviroment where more than the crook is hit with the weapon. It also help take the "fun" out of horsing around with it (tasers, pepper sprays, ect.) if you know what it feels like then you would be more carefull around others. Although it is quite amusing to EMS when the deputies:
1) release peperspray towards the wind, in a closed room (booking) and in the squad car.
2) fire the taser pointblank with another officer trying to hold the crook, so close that the deputy and the crook is standing in the same puddle of water, or for the second time while the other cops are trying to cuff the crook.

Is not just police departments that have and use them. I've been known to stand one the peak of my barn and shoot myself with one. I really should've done it from the end where I placed a pile of hay, not the other. And I guess I should've worn a helmet or something. I was testing my theory that tazers wouldn't really flaten someone, like in the movies, and to prove my point, did it from the barn roof. Not one of my better theories, or had it turned up too high, I guess.

That logic sounds pretty stupid to me. Does that mean a policeman has to get shot with a gun before he is allowed to carry a gun for use? By the same errant logic, does a doctor have to have a broken arm before he is trained how to set them? My SIL is a cop who is trained to use TASER and really likes it. He no longer has to expose himself to a beating to subdue a subject.

Hold on just a minute and take a chill pill. Do you really think I'd stand on edge of the peak of a barn and shoot myself with a taser to see hard it hurts when I'd fall face first into the ground about 20 or so feet down? Yeah, right. The neighbors might get a kick out of watching me do such a stupid thing, but even with some of the stupid and goofy things I do out of fun, that wouldn't be one of them. Was making a stupid joke. Holy cow.

Mark.

A few of years ago a group of loud but peaceful protestors were maced in front of the TV cameras in British Columbia during some trade conference with Chinese officials. The cop looked like the middle aged stereotype and was all wound up and caught up in the excitement. And he hosed down the crowd with a seltzer bottle sized mace unit. He did get a minor reprimand for being over zealous. If he had got a snout full himself I'm certain he would not have been so keen to hospitalize those who had family in Chinese prisons for being a Christian etc. The Prime Minister was asked about the incident and he said he put pepper on his eggs all the time. He was the same prime Minister who grabbed and choked down a protestor in full view of the cameras.

I think it really is a way to sooth the public image.. Making the officers be subjected to the Taser & Tear gas shows the public that the officers understand the effects, & will use them with discretion...

Our local city police force has the same policy-you want to carry one in the line of duty, then sample its power!. What made this even better was they have a program every Wednsday on local access channel which they show pictures of all the people who skipped out on court dates, fugitives, etc. One week they actually showed the policemen in training with the taser and from the chief on down, they were getting hit with tasers live on TV. It was wild. Some of them pi$$ed their britches!
