Long Term Fuel Storage?

My brother lives and works in the North and the fuel supplies for isolated communities are going in now on the ice roads. This is gasoline and diesel fuel both and the people there usually like to try to have a 16 month supply on hand in case they either have very heavy demand or shipments are delayed the next year. Is there some sort of product that is added to the fuels to keep them "fresh"? I know that "aged" gasoline deteriorates. Thanks in advance.

Cool, air tight and avoid temp swings which causes condensation.

There is a way to safely store diesel fuel for long periods. Every major institution that I know of has large quantities of diesel fuel stored underground. These systems are tested periodically to make sure they operate properly but they don't test them long enough to burn very much of the fuel in storage. The usage is very low and turnover of fuel stock take many years.

I know this will trigger some responses but I have stored my boat for over 2 years with fuel in the tank and have had no problems at all with it. I did put a storage additive in it when putting it away with a full tank (50 gallons), and took the advice of the marine mechanic and used PRI-G additive when I put it back in service. I have a large water separating cartridge fuel filter in-line as well as 2 screens down stream. I try to use as much fuel as I can as soon as I get it back in the water so when I put fresh fuel in I am replacing a higher volume.

This is starting to concern me a little however as I don"t use the boat as often anymore and I have a tough time using 50 gallons in a season. So far it has been OK but I"m always concerned about getting a tank of sludge.

Not to suggest that this would work for everyone but so far it"s been ok for me, so far..... ..

the big thing esp w/diesel is make sure no water and use a good biocide. diesel will age but not as quick or as bad as gas. stabil helps but isnt a cure. with diesel jsut run a good biocide.

Here's a link to Mobil's response to FAQ's. About 1/2 way down, you'll see their response to gasoline storage. I've also read on a petroleum related web site that gas will keep for up to 12 months if kept in an air tight container, no sunlight and at a stable temperature. I rekon Sta-bil would be a good thing too.

Tom, I run a fuel & lube testing lab in the USA
and have encountered a lot of fuel related problems. There are several additive packages that can be used. The fuels going into long term storage ought to be treated for bacterial, detergency and flow improvement characteristics.
Your fuel supplier ought to be able to tell you what they can do for you.

Will unleaded petrol store that long? We have problem with it if left over year in a lawnmower. We are being advised to drain the fuel at the end of the year and fill with fresh for the new season.

Fuels have a limited shelf life. Additives can make them last a little longer, but out beyond a year and a half , you could begin to have some problems. Fuels are made to be used relatively quickly. Heck even the US Govt, whom we have done testing work for, has learned that it is far better to store crude and make the fuel from that when you need it. Many of the diesel reserves were a mess, full of gums and bacterial growths. Check us out at Parctech.com on the Net, we have several pilot plants where we duplicate refinery processes along with automotive facilities and our testing lab. We are an independent testing lab, so we only have an oblegation to our owners and that is to make them money.

Wish i had knowen about you 5 years ago when i needed some gas checked. A fuel supplier screwed a customer of mine and it cost both of us a bunch.

For onfarm storage of gasoline I used Sta-Bil. I would put a diesel fuel additive in the fuel tank on the deisel tractor when I filled up.
