My dad left me a 1967 Kaiser M-38 Canadian Military Jeep. The canvas top is good, it's strong mechanically, but the body got eaten badly by rust the winter it spent in a heated garage getting a motor job.

I have left it sitting outside for three years. The tires are still up and it should start with a tow.

A guy is coming to look at it as a parts source for a restoration. I told him we could start talking at $1000 CDN.

The truck has 38,000 miles on it. Registration is complete. It has a 24v system, military tires and the original paint.

The engine has about twenty hours on it since the rebuild. The rest of the power train is fine, as well. Brakes are recently done with a new master cylinder kit.

The bad news is that body panels are extensively rusted: there's a big hole under the driver's feet, and I assume the frame is no better, though it is still square.

Opinions?

The M38 would be worth more in my eyes. Here is a link to the light military trucks and jeeps. Double check which one your talking about. The M-715s were the 1 1/4 ton ones. Mark H.

Isn"t that a M-38-A1? A M-38 would be a flatfender jeep, looking like the MASH jeeps from TV.
Basically a CJ-5 with military upbringing. Not as popular as other military vehicles..yet.
I would say you are pretty close on your price..Maybe a little on the high side if the frame is crispy.
And yes, I own a couple of army jeeps myself. All WWII.None for sale.More fun than a tractor, as I can drive them places and actually get there in a reasonable time.:-)

You would be hard pressed to buy my 1953 M37 off me for less than $6,000.00 some of us guys like the old Military trucks for there toys to play in! The M38s do not instrust me as much because they are the newer looking ones but they are fixed up by others. Rust can lower the price big time just like on the tractors. My truck was rust free and complete still. 800.00 is not a bad price but the rust will knock it down depending on how bad it is. Mark H.

Nice truck!

Twenty-two years ago a colleague of mine bought one of those in mint condition to use as a daily driver. He decided the six was too slow for the highway, so he talked the auto shop teacher into trading a new small-block Chrysler (273?)that was in the shop for the flat six and having his senior boys make the swap.

The truck was a familiar sight around Smiths Falls for years until Pat's retirement: he regularly hauled the school's canoes around with it, quite often with a large group of teenagers in the back.

Dump it fast and cheap. Maybe pay the man $50.00 to haul it off. Those were the biggest piece of junk the Military ever got suckered into buying. Went up to the Pirmassans depot to turn my Dodge weapons carrier in and by the time I passed the main gate on the way out I wanted my old unit back.

Frankly, I share your opinion on the quality of these vehicles. Anything I own I want to run as well as my '95 4Runner. The Kaiser's nowhere close to being in the running -- though the MF35 Perkins is. It's a good machine.

There. This discussion line is no longer off topic.

Yes Rj but guys collect this sort of vehicle the fact that it was not well made originally may not affect the value today.Rod says it will run,and it is old.I think guys into battle reenacting would love this.As time passes all these things increase in value.[Hey Rod your not mad at me about the send the Canadian Doctor a couple grand and a thank you note comment are you?]

A guy rented space in my barn for a 1948 Jeepster It was kind of like the first sport utility.Anyway after he died his sister sold it for $200.I was not interested because it had a 283 chevrolet motor and rough interior.Just adding some useless info to the discussion.Im guessing yours could easily be worth a thousand to a military collector.

Hold on, I have a friend who has a number of contacts in nearby Edmonton who are into the old military stuff in a big way. They have everything from Jeeps to amphibious landing craft etc. I have recently seen a Korean War Ford Jeep for sale (restored) in the Old Autos paper, it was from Ontario. The guy was asking 10 grand (CDN). I have removed my email hide feature so if you hit on my name link I will put you in touch with this fellow if you wish. Have you any photos that you could email?

Mike: I sent you a separate email. Thanks.

Because I couldn't figure out how to post a photo to this spot, I cheated and mounted a picture of a Kaiser tractor in the Tractor Photos Gallery.

It skidded a lot of things and pulled cables and towed waggons for twenty-three years: it deserves some respect as a beast of burden.
