Leaving April 17, coming back the 21st. I know it"s a city but how about them tractors? Seems like one should not have to travel too far to see a mess of them.

I've never done much exploring around there, but I'd think the SAC base would be interesting, as well as Norfolk where I think Johnny Carson grew up. Jim.

Would be better in late June or July for Thresher shows Waverly,Sterling. Pioneer Village minden nebraska 3-4 hour drive from Omaha. Stuhr museum in Grand Island 3 hour drive. Allen In NE 6 hour drive... You could always buy one while you were here to take home.

The latest antiques roadshow was done at Omaha, there was a small segment where they visited an old iron collector who lived just north of Omaha, seems like he had mostly steam tractors. Does anyone remember the name of the man? I would think he would be willing to show you his collection.
Another interesting thing in Omaha might be the Union Pacific railroad musuem. I have not been there, but after seeing some small bits on tv I think it would be very interesting.

Don Smeal had the collection that was shown on Antiques Roadshow. He passed away after the filming of the show, but before it was aired on tv. They had the tractors lining the road to the cemetery for his funeral.

Don Smeal is the guys name with the steam tractors. He is the namesake for Smeal MFG. They are located up in Snyder and build firetrucks. The SAC museum is also a good place to visit!

It"s been awhile since I was in that area, but if you can"t find anything in Omaha, Iowa is just across the river. Gotta be something there!

If Marlon Perkins is stuffed and displayed anywhere, I suggest it is in St. Louis, Missouri, where he lived and was the Curator of the zoo forever. He was sponsored on Wild Kingdom by Mutual of Omaha, one of who's directors was Jimmy Dolittle, now maybe he or Henry Fonda, or his neighbor Marlon Brando might be imortalized in Omaha. I would and do go to Omaha quite frequently, and the absolute can't miss exhibit is at the Joslyn(sic) art museum. Fabulous paintings by artists who traveled up river in the early 1800's, post Lewis and Clark, took may notes and illustrations, almost like pictures, all the way to the Northwest before it got spoiled. Don't miss it.

All good thoughts and thanks for the ideas. I don't think I'm going to have time for any 6 hour trip.
One thing I want to see is anything to do with Lewis and Clark.
Also, I wonder if old Marlon Perkins is stuffed and on display somewheres.

Les, there is a brand new Lewis and Clark museum in Nebraska City, it is built overlooking the Missouri river that they explored. Nebraska city is less than an hour south of Omaha. Nebraska city is also home to the Arbor lodge and John Browns cave.

Les, Not quite Lewis and Clark, but there is a reconstructed Army post, circa 1825, Fort Atkinson, located in Fort Calhoun Nebraska, about .5 hour drive north of the city, And its built on the site most feel was the actual Council Bluffs meeting with the Indians. Also just north of there, on US 30 east of Blair Nebraska, at the Desoto Bend site,is the museum of the SteamBoat Bertrand, quite extensive, cargo that was recovered from the boat, which sank in the 1860s. Both sites within 45 minutes drive of the city. Nebraska city is good, but not certain Arbor Lodge is open at this time of year. You can visit ArborLodge on the net. John in Nebraska
