My big house dog opens our front door and lets her self out. The door has one of those lever handles on it because if not we can't turn the handle, weak arm problems. How do we stop this dog from doing this. She jumps up and hooks the handle with her paw and then pulls the door open. I was going to turn the handle is it was up/down but it can only be mounted side ways so that is out. Any body have any ideas???
Thanks

The idea is like the oval shaped in stead of completely round

"lets herself out"? I don't see the problem. Fence the yard and let her have her way.

Most door handles open by either pushing down or by pulling up (or twisting right or left). Just bolt a post on the door so that the handle can't be pushed down. If your dog learns to push up and open the door; put it to work driving the tractor!

Friend of mine's dog did that. He mounted a piece of aluminum angle to door just below handle so it could not be pulled down. Had to open by pushing handle up. So far dog hasn't figured that one out!

Old,
Real cheap solution. Buy a piece of that clear plastic carpet runner, like you cover up the traffic areas of the hall with? Place it in front of the door upside down, with the little spikes sticking up. She won't like to stand on it, so she can't reach the handle. Our inside dog needed some help keeping off the bed. Bought a couple pieces of that stuff, and she won't go up there anymore. Once in a while she forgets and we lay it down again for a few days.

I think if you buy one for the opposite door, you can turn it. So if you have a left hand swing door, buy one for a right hand swing.

Would it work to put a mouse trap(not rat) on the handle with rubber bands. Not enough to hurt them, but it'll scare her and after a couple times she'll get the idea.

Not with my dog she would just jump back and then destroy the trap. Shes one of those dogs most say people shouldn't have.

Mount something to the door directly under the lever so that the lever cannot be pushed down. You should still be able to open the door by lifting up on the lever. Eventually your dog will learn how to get the door open even with the obstruction inplace but it should work for a while. Your dog sounds like a pretty smart one.

I sort of took your idea, I took an old chock chain collar and hooked it up to the handle and then put a screw in the other end up higher so it will only turn up, maybe this will stop her at least for a few days. Thanks

Old, I just had another idea,(I think that's why my head hurts) Would it work to fasten a couple of springs to the handle and then to the door, you know, one spring to pull the handle up, and another spring to pull the handle down. If you dog is hitting the handle with his paw, maybe the spring would pull it back up before the door opens. I know what you are dealing with, I had a german shepard once that could open a door by grabbing the door knob with her teeth

Add a deadbolt to the door. Now if your dog manages to work the door handle, the door wont open unless the deadbolt is unlocked. You can usually get combo units that have handle and deadbolt keyed alike so you only have to keep up with one key to get in. Also possible to get a locksmith to get a deadbolt keyed the same as handle.

Deadbolt or mount doorknob higher on door out of reach. Maybe dog would learn to jump though.
