(I posted this on another forum, sorry if there is a duplication) Anyway, I have a brand new Onan flat 20 hp engine in a Toro Groundsmaster that will not pull a load when hot. Starts great, runs great for about 40 minutes, then bogs down, backfires and gives up. Will restart immediately, but won't take a load. I've checked valve clearance, compression, manifold vacuum, put on a gravity fuel system, everything seems OK. The only clue is it seems to be heat related, otherwise I am stumped. Any thoughts?

Have you ever checked the valve clearances..??

Change the plugs, and when it is running, place your hand over the air-inlet to the carb (partially), and see if it "picks up power" or "picks up the load" better..if so, it is running lean.. Those mixture screw settings are pretty narrow in latitude..have to be set just right.. There could be a bit of dirt laying in the power needle cavity..causing a lean condition at times..

Ron..

Had one that did that---over heated and lost power, found mouse nest pluging cooling fins. Everett

May have a problem in the ignition system, bad coil in the mag if it has one or maybe even getting a vapor lock in the fuel system
