Howdy folks,

I'm sure you might think this question belongs in the buyer/seller feedback section but I'm not here to report anything; just ask a quick question. I'm considering buying some rear rims for a JD M for around 375 per rim. These are supposed to be good used rims. The dealer is Dennis Polk over in Indiana. I've never dealt with him before and since this is a fairly large purchase I was wondering if you all had done any business with him and how it went? I appreciate your help. God bless.

I bought a JD M rim and hub from Rusty Acres Ranch; quality fine and price, even with shipping, was less than I could find closer to home in Maine.

Check John's site: Link

I have bought things (parts and tractors) from Dennis in the past. I like going to his sales. There is just one time that weighs on my heart that took place at his sale one March. A D JD came in the door hissing because a pitcock was gone. Dennis flys off in a rage, gets the mic and says " I don't know which one of you SOB's (in full term) did this and so on" not worth typing. This is a man that has a big calling. I did not like that being said to a group of people in public with women and children in the bleachers. Things in the north may be done differently than here in the south. If that had happend here in TN and I was having the sale. The sale would have stopped and he might have had a hard time getting to his truck. This has bothered me for some time because I was standing near him when it happened and I wanted to find a hole to get in. I know that he means well but there is a time and place for things. For a $20 pitcock that could have worked loose and come off without sticky fingers was it worth it Dennis?

Old: Nothing against Polk's. I've bought from them with no problem. You might check www.unverferth.com in Kaleida, Oh . I've been able to get new for 'used' prices. Nice factory and 4 hrs closer (to me) than Polk's. There's always the 'wanted ads' here on good old YTM. Just thinkin' on the keyboard.

Here's a couple idaes for you- 1)ck in the classified section of this site, there are a couple people here in NY who advertise alot of JD parts, you could email and see if they have any rims, if not maybe they could tell you where else to look. 2) ck on other JD tractor websites, even put a "wanted to buy" ad on and give iot a little time 3) post question with size needed to see if some other rims might work. Good luck on the parts hunt and job hunt, not sure of your situation but maybe you could still go back to school p/t for whatever you didnt take before that you need to get a job??Hope this helps JK

There are more places to look if price is important. Don't know where you are, but there are a couple of places in SW Missouri that might have what you want. Don't know what the price would be, but wouldn't hurt to check it out. Sharp's in Fairgrove, MO has an extensive bone yard. Their website is www.oldjd4u.com. Nelson Prewitt of Midwest Tractor also has a lot of inventory. His email is JD4SALE@aol.com. Phone is 1-866-235-3555. You will have to let it ring sometimes.

As far as the job goes, if you are wanting to be a TV weatherman, you might look at the smaller stations. I know that our local station brings in people right out of college as reporters, sports announcers and weathermen. They work for a year or two and get their feet wet and go on to bigger and better things. Keep looking, there's a niche for ya somewhere. You never know where life will take you. Went 6 years to Bible college and for what ever reason, that was as far as the Lord wanted me to go. Figured I would be working in a church; starting a church; or doing something full time in that capacity. I have been running a printing press for the last 15 years. Wouldn't have guessed back then that this would be where I would wind up. Keep your eyes open and enjoy the ride along the way. Take a tractor ride every once in a while and blow the cobwebs out while enjoying what you have now.

Howdy,

I did check with Miller tire to see what new ones go for and they are at 485.00 per rim. It's not good though since the guy I'm doing this restoration for just came over and paid 1000 and said that should cover everything left on the restoration. He's not rich by any means and I've been looking for rims for a long time now with no luck whatsoever. I'm leery of spending so much for used rims but new ones just can't be purchased. I still have to get rear tires for this thing. Polk also has the governor parts for the R that I'm in need of. I'm just not sure what to do. I really want to get this thing done. I have no job right now and might consider another restoration for hire gig if a fella I know is still interested and this thing has been sitting in the shop lacking only rear wheels for like 5 months now. I realize my patience is not at a par level right now but things have really just slid downhill for me since graduating college. I guess I'll lay some of my woes on ya just go get it off my chest. Graduated in June with a meteorology degree, no jobs out there for new grads., all the potential jobs want experienced folks, I don't feel like I'm educated enough in my field but have no idea where to get the materials to become more educated, my family and friends and even church members make me feel ashamed of myself for not having a job, I didn't do a very few things in college that I find out now would have given me a job, I want to maintain my grandparents farm but my folks want me to erase my mind concerning all things farming, and the list goes on. Sorry to dump that on ya but right now you share the only common bond with me among those i call friend. Thank you for listening. God bless you all.

Traditionaly used parts sell for 1/2 price of new. Since new are available this should hold true. Polk's and Dengler are on the high end of the price scale, they do spend a fortune on advertising. SHOP AROUND !

Don't be too discouraged. Most all professional jobs require some degree of experience. The question is, where does one get it. I know you might not want to hear it, but the military always needs meterologists. Pull a tour and if you don't like it, you will have your experience to put toward another job. Any decent sized airport with a tower will need meterologists. Today, I noticed a civilian meterologist job advertized at the air base where I work. I believe it was rated at a GS-12 which translates into about 70,000 per year. It might take one a number of years to get to this level, but most all of us start at the bottom in our careers. I know I did. Keep your head up and spirits high. God Bless

Don't know much about rims and the such, but do know alot about hard times. Lost my job after 20 years due to Chapter 11, went back to school for 2 years, got a so-so job for a year $7.00 hr, and now have a pretty good job that pays the bills, heats the house and puts food on the table. Have had this job for 12 yrs, great boss and fellow employees. Great family in the house and a nice blue tractor in the barn. Life is good. Hang in there. God some times takes longer in getting back to your prayers. God Bless. Craig

Dennis Polk typically has good stuff, but he's also typically on the high end for price.

You need to check around some more. Just take your time if you can. Dennis is by far not the only person in the world that has 2cly parts like he would want you to think. I just sold a set for $200 (both of them). I don't have any more at this time but there were many JD M's built.

I have had dealings with him, and yes he is high priced. Seems he knows what he has and if you want it you"ll pay for it!! If he says he has it and he says it is in good condition, it is. Never had a bad experience with him, just costly. luckydog

Never had any dealings with the man but I am sure that he knows his livelyhood is based on maintaining a good, honest reputation. Having said that, I will add that $375 per rim does sound a bit high, but I am not that familiar with John Deere stuff either. I would check with a place like Miller tire.com, and see what brand new rims go for.
