A diesel tractor that has very few hours but has done lots of sitting around or one that has a few hours and has seen more constant use over the years?. The reason I ask is because I had bought a pickup that had been sitting and had alot of problems with it. I know our tractors don't run as good if they don't get used regularly and they always run better after being used all day here and there and gotten up to a good full operating temperature. Does a diesel that has done alot of sitting since new and is say 20-25 yrs old gonna be really goofed up and gummed up or would it be fine?.
Thanks!

Thanks all. I guess an extremely low houred tractor wouldn't be a bargain then, especially since I hate breakdowns. I'd much rather have one thats going to stay with me better.

Hi Jon,

Grab the one that has just pulled out of a field. Settin' doesn't do anything mechanical any good.

'Course if it has a loader on it, then we have a whole new argument. Can't get over how a loader will tear a tractor up. :>(

Well, I am looking for a 4wd with a loader this time around. I found a 60hp Allis a 1981 model with just 600hrs on it online, I did the math and thats just 24hrs a year put on it since new, but then again maybe thats just 600hrs before the tach stopped working, but it does look like a really low hour tractor in the picture. The other tractor I was considering was a White 2-60 thats in pretty good shape and has 5,700hrs. Thanks alot!

Being out there working on equipment all the time I can honestly say I see alot more more problems with the equipment that spends alot of time sitting than the ones that get run consistently. When dad worked at the Fiat-Allis dealership back in the 70's every piece of equipment on the yard got started, warmed up to operating temp, and ran around the yard at least once a month. This allowed moisture buildup to get "burned" out of the system as well as keeping the seals lubricated to prevent dry rotting and flattening. As far as actual on road vehicles go I've always heard it put this way... If given the choice between two identical cars, one driven everyday by a hot-rodding teenager and the other driven back and forth to church every Sunday, never over 35MPH, by a little old lady, your better off taking the one driven by the teenager.

Think of it this way if you sit around and don't do much of any thing could you go out and run a mile?? same goes with old tractors if they don't work they will probably have problems, rust in the cylinders gummed up etc. I have a 1935 JD-B and it still does a little work every year and will as long as I can

Long ago, before I started in business I ran work for a large excavating company. They got a good deal on some dirt scrapers that were brands new, but had been sitting on a dock on the west coast for about 2 years. They bought them and had nothing but problems from start until they sold them. I don't think they ever all ran together, there was always one or two broke down.
