As a result of a random Ministry of Health audit I received a statement of how much my surgeon was paid for a very tricky eardrum repair recently. It involved about 1 1/2 hours, tissue transplant, a surgical technique this guy developed and perfected.... and for that the guy got paid
$338.40 CDN.

No wonder we can't keep doctors in Ontario any more.

We have govt run health care here in the US too, it's called the VA Medical Center. Nothing but death traps if you ask me. Not the kind of thing I would wish upon society at large. The reason insurance is so high in Texas is because of all the illegals flooding into the hospital emergency rooms for all their health care needs. By law, the hospitals have to treat them and give them prescriptions too. The cost of all those who don't pay gets added on to the bills of us few suckers who do pay and then we wonder why insurance is so high. The sad part is that the wetbacks who loot our private hospitals get better healthcare than the poor old vets get at the VA.

Guess the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, but don't think the US system is better. Small towns can't get doctors or hospitals. Corporations are owning the Hospitals and doctor practices.Sure the doctors get paid good, but they are a slave to someone else too. Our insurance dictates what they can or can't do too. Here a doctor prescribes a medicine or a procedure it has to be preapproved by the insurance if it isn't emergency-----AND----that's if you are lucky enough to afford insurance. Affordable insurance is more and more going to a high deductable and savings plans to pay the deductable. It goes much further, but isn't all roses here either.

Want to beat the Medical thieves in USA? Live a very healthy life style. Don't take their drugs and screw them that way. It's the only way to beat them. I know it's not always possible but give it your best shot. Good Luck.

I'm not too happy about the doctor shortage here, but I'm sick of the high taxes here, as well. Imagine what the taxes would be if that doctor gets paid the "US" price rate for the same procedure.

Does it bother you that your food is so cheap? and that the food producers are not just leaving the industry but losing everything as well. Where's the post on that.

I'm tired of feeding the rest of this country at my expense. I would like to sell my corn and beans in the US, and get their prices and subsidies as well. Maybe, I should talk to your doctor buddies and move shop.

Rod, your intent about your post doesn't bother me. If we had any extra money the doctors would be a good place to spend it, I don't. Don't forget the overbilling that they are capable of. It doesn't sound like you make a living farming and I would bet your smart enough to work in a sheltered environment like government or union work. Hound

It is no wonder we can't keep doctors in Canada for all they get paied. Got to love the system know without it I would have been bankrupt about 4 times now and still owing for the rest of my life but them goverement guys are getting it screwed up royally. I was reading that Ontario took in 1.4 billion in medical directed taxes, whatever that means guess the taxes setup to pay for OHIP but they only are paying out 800 million. 600 million is going to the goverment somewhere for something else. Don't matter which party gets elected we all get that one finger treatment that we hate going to the doctors for. Got to say though that this dimwit leading Ont. now has to be the biggest lier we have had in a long time, haven't kept even one promise yet, glad I didn't vote for him.

Rod, remember last election McGuinty prommised more money for health care. He just didn't tell us then it would be paid out in Severance Packages to all the Health Care Workers.

He obviously doesn't practice in Texas. If so the procedure would have cost you $30k.

Texas has the highest medical insurance in the continental USA. Must be the high life style.

The US could learn alot from our neighbor to the north. Until we are able to bargain or bid for drugs as a single pay system, we will continue to see double digit inflation in drug costs.

Rod - I, for one ,am very grateful for our health-care system. I shudder to think where our family would be to-day without it. My wife is seriously handicapped by Multiplte Sclerosis. At present, she has nursing visits 3 times/week along with 20 hrs of home-care.For 3 yrs she had nursing care 3 times/day , 7 days/wk along with the home care as well. Add to that 2 very expensive power wheel-chairs ,patient lifts, medications and surgical procedures. Since we farm, I have no access to medical benefits so you can see where we would be without O.H.I.P. Sure , I know people like to complain about waiting lines in E.R. etc. but we should be very greatful for what we have. I sincerely hope people don't have to go through what we have in order to appreciate the Canadian system , flawed as it is.

The waiting lines in the hospital E.R could be shortened if people with a "boo boo" on their finger or a runny nose.Would see a family physician instead. More family practices and a user fee in the ER for people with minor problems would help reduce the patient ER load. While a US physician may make serious money they pay outlandish malpractice premiums. The US health system and just about everything else where significant $$$ is involved. Is being drained dry by malpractice/libel lawyers/vultures and greedy plaintiffs.

My point is that OHIP has been a great system for all my life, but the bean counters are strangling the life out of it.

This surgeon is a young, gifted and innovative guy. I've had several medical friends like him over the years, and they have all left for the U.S. or closed their practices.

We can't afford to lose the doctors, but who can make a living getting $285 for six months of pre-natal care and delivering a baby? That's why my next door neighbour closed her practice.

The best and the brightest of my students used to go to medical school. Now they go into research. My son's best friend got hired after his B.A. at Queen's to work on a Phd. at Johns Hopkins. They hired everybody in the lab. He should have gone to medical school. His bride was the top nursing grad in her year. Now she's working in Baltimore, as well.

14 years ago I had 10 physicians among the guests at the house for a block party. Now we don't even have a family doctor.
