Say a VERY beautifully restored Farmall 400 sell for $14,000. It was nicer that when it was new.

What did a 3020 cost new in 1970? Probably $7000. According to the consumer price index figures, that is about $42,000 in today's dollars. So at $20,000 for a half worn out 65 hp equipped tractor, that ain't real bad. That is, if they still made 3020's today, they would be priced at around $40,000.

That brings to mind of a high dollar 630 JD that sold at auction about 1989 here (before I feel like the two cylinders went up) for $7,100. This was south of Greenville, Ohio for a 1-owner nice narrow front tractor with 3 point, flat tops, overhauled, and 3700 hours on it. 60 % rubber. Most 630's at the time were selling for $2500-3000 in restored shape. The guy that bought it took off driving it home, 40 miles away...

Gentlemen, I am so very joyful. I am almost so very certain that the tractor in question was purchased for me and I will be so anxious to have it delivered to my second mother and her sister in south moolah Africa. I am now seeking transporting of this very fine tractor. I will be very willing to make same deal for transporting as made for purchase. My mother is very much wanting tractor, she will pay one million US to anyone, and then that person should send excess back to me. Thank you all so very much.

Hi Howard,

I've witnessed the same thing. Those green guys have this "attitude" thing going on. Doesn't matter the value of what they are bidding on; they just gotta outdo one another. :>)

You and I both know that a 3020 is not worth $20K, I don't care what kind of shape it is in.

You would be right. Ouuuuu ch! I've seen nice 4020s going for $14K, and I don't want one of them that bad. Ouuuuuch! Let me put my hands over my a..!

Few years ago, went into a Harley dealer in IL one Saturday, and there was a nice looking Road King up on display, if you like Road Kings. I've got no use for them. An old biker and his old biker Ol' Lady come walking in and ask how much. The sales guys says "$29K". The old biker says, "There's an a..hole for every seat, and mine aint the one for that one", turned around and went out to his old iron and scootered off.

Keep that in mind. There's always a fool somewhere.

Ahh Mark, I agree is his, her's, or their money. Just seems like an awful lot. I've looked over 4020's for $7K that run real well, are a hundred horses +, and always were quite a tractor, and always will be. For that price, need new rubber, paint, and I'm sure some work, but will still get the job done no matter what it looks like. When I saw one recently for $14K that's a sharp lookin tractor, and engine is rebuilt, I looked, but said at $14K is still out of line. Maybe if I'd rebuilt it and had that into it, well, different story.

You're right, is their monies, not mine, and they can do whatever they want with their monies. But I'm still gonna walk away shakin my head. Everyone has in their minds what something is worth and a break or cutoff point, and, well, it's their money, and it went well beyond my cutoff point. But I agree, it's their money, buy whatever they want. Won't hurt me a bit.

No hard feelings Mark.

Heck,

I'd drop $16K for a 786 in a hearbeat. They were only made one year and are rare as hen's teeth. :>)

Same way with a clean 766D. Although they were build for a number of years, there just are not that many of 'em around.

I think you completely missed my point but you just made it.

The value is in the eye of the beholder. No way would I pay 20k for a 3020, but no way would I pay 17k for a 786 either. Then again I use my tractors, not really a collector.

Point is to say only "green" people make purchases that don't make financial sense is just ridiculous.

Allan,

Now Allan, you know as well as I do that "value is in the eye of the beholder". Like I wouldn't give you a plugged nickle for tickets to a pro football game. No value. See, that's my opinion. You have yours. Besides, it's his money. He earned it (I guess) and he can spend it as he wishes. Just like me.

The more I think about it the more I realize just how outragous $20,000 for a 3020 was. It shouldn't have gone for over $10,000. I hope it was 4wd and had a very nice bucket on it :-) Theres a 3020 in the photo ads right now for under $7,000 with faded paint, but runs and works. Some people, once they start bidding they don't want to stop and loose all sense of reality, they could have bought the nicest 4020 for less than that, I saw one with duals, cab and super rare FWA on here for $20,000 awhile ago and thats the highest priced 4020 I've ever seen. I would have held out for a newer 4wd the same horsepower with a nice bucket on it for the same money, like maybe a John Deere 5400.

3 years ago I bought a 4010D for $4500. Painted and rubbered it. Looked real nice. Ran like a top; everything works. Had zero problems till just now; had to rebuild the brake master cylinder (kit was $20). So there are tractors and there are tractors. Your money, your decision.

i ran into a sittuation here in Mich last year where two bidders shot the price way up for an item simply because they didnt like eachother and both were determined that the other guy wasnt going to win the bid. I thought at the time that that was just the place to carry our their hatred, which was their own wallet. Just keep bidding till one guy couldnt afford to hate the other guy. Come to think of it, didn"t the Russians and the Americans do the same thing with the Military?

Oh for sure, and these old ones are a heck of alot cheaper than new, great googly mooglies don't the drive go sky high on the new ones with just a few options, like a cab will be a $10,000 option and 4wd is another $8,000. Sounds like you got a heckuva good deal on your 4010. One thing an auctioneer told me and this is true, "there is always a good deal to be had at every auction, you just need to pay attention and know your stuff", I'd say this 3020 wasn't it.

You are correct on the "good deal on the 4010". Was on the way to the grocery store one day and was rubbernecking as usual. Had owned an LP 4020 but really wanted a diesel. The 4020 had been gone for over a year.

The owner had a rif with IRS and needed money fast. Within the previous 3 years had redone the engine and the past 18 months had gone thru the complete "wet" section. I knew as red RTV was all over the place, so he wasn't lieing. Couldn't believe it was so cheap (as you said) but I hauled tail to the bank and came back the next day with cash. Told the banker this was a deal I couldn't refuse.

Put a Koyker 310 loader on it with hay spikes and it makes one fine machine.

Now thats what I call being in the right place at the right time. My dad managed to pick up an IH 484 with an almost new quick tach loader on it for $6,000 just a few years ago, it didn't have any paint left on it because it had been used for silage and left in the bunk, but it runs like new and we have now repainted it. I see them in fastline magazine for $10,000 for just the tractor, and ours has a Case IH 2250 loader on it worth about $3,500. Only compaint is I really wish it was a 4x4, it's always stuck the very second you get it off a hard surface and the loader is too big and too hard on the tractor. Me thinks it may be getting time to sell it and move up to something 4wd with a loader better matched, but I'll bet we will miss the fuel economy of this one.

Interesting note....fuel economy. I have Fords too. They are hard to beat in that area.

On Front end loaders, the secret is weight on the rear and fat tires on the front. Does make a difference.

Well, that 2250 loader is really huge on it and it has an oversized bucket on it ta boot, and I got 7.50-16's on the front, Yeah they could definatly stand to be wider and that front end does like to sink, but it's currently what I'm running. Our land is wet and thats the big problem. It also doesn't have very much ground clearance and even with a heavy impliment on the back it still doesn't go very many places. Dads been eyeing a White 2-60 4x4 with a loader to replace it. Great tractor with the loader off, even in the mud, but when the loader is on it's severly handicapped. The neighbors are getting sick of pulling it out and we catch alot of flack from them about us having other tractors and can't get it out. It's an IH 484, not a Ford, and it will run all day on 5 gallons of fuel.

Leland old buddy,

If you'll remember he showed us a picture of his recently restored 2440 with 3 bottom plow barely visable behind the right rear tire. I tried to buy that from him and he said "no sale".

Reason being he knew what he had and knew what he had put into it. Sooooo I was still a lookin. But I know what I bought (surely the other guy did too) and paid the price..... ...just like the guy that marches into the dealership and plunks down $55k for essentially the same thing but date of mfgr is 2005. They aren't any prettier than this baby.

Now if I was buyin just to be buyin he also had some Case tractors. Like I remember a 2550 (130 hp ) he wanted $10k for. Just for a comparison, I drove it around the lot and parked it. Bought the deere; no comparison.

Aw come on Leland,

Not thrown around my man. Serious investment in what one wants. Why can't you work all your life and retire and spend some of it on what you want. You can. I did. Will not back track. It's winter and the fields are slush. So I just get a beverage of choice and get a lawn chair and sit by it and admire it.

Now what would I pay for a new Silverado that I don't need now that I don't have to drive to work? At least 2x the cost of the tractor and get no where's near the pleasure.

Not necessarily. Was bidding on a bull one time. Decided to stop bidding. Auction stopped. Seemed my opponent, somewhere up in the bleachers as the auctioneer kept looking up there, was a myth.

I didn't really want the bull but no one was bidding on it and I needed one (had picked out another and hadn't come through the ring yet) so I bid on it.

Got a good bull (1000 lb brangus) for a reasonable price. Never know what you're bidding against at an auction.

Hi Mark,

When that happens to me, especially on a high dollar item that has bumped up against it's value, I stop the auction and demand to know who I'm biddin' against.

I wanna be eyeball to eyeball with the other guy and if he wants the item more than I do, that's fine.

However, if the cryer is just pullin' bids outta the air, I make darned sure everyone in the crowd knows about it.

Hi again Allan,

Mine was not an auction. I bought it from a local guy whose B-I-Law owned it. Used it with a batwing mower to clean off property he'd buy, cleanup, put up a fence and barn and resell.

This guy has a "fix-um-up" shop and family farms 3 counties around here. Guess restoring tractors is his hobby. Maybe it started out as a way to get rid of his old farm tractors and turned into a (poorly managed) restoration business. He doesn't advertise, has no sign and is seldom at his lot.

I have driven past his place many times looking at his beautiful tractors but could never afford to turn in the gate. On this occasion, I was already retired, was going to town, as I passed by I noticed his truck was there and the gate was open. I stopped and backed up about half a block. Truck turned it'self into his lot, I had nothing to do with it...ha ha.

Well, I guess the buyer decided the price was right, and that's all that really matters.

I don't understand why people not involved in a sale get so concerned? Perhaps there were sentimental reasons involved in getting the high price?

He was just wondering why it went for so much and what is was worth and I have at times wondered the same thing. Yes, $20,000 for a 3020 is way too much compaired to what it's actual book value is, but not compaired to what a new tractor of the same horsepower would cost, so it depends on how you look at it. No doubt something being in mint condition brings more money, but as Bob said, there may have been two bidders with sentimental attachment or something.

Just bought a '74 4230 (100 PTO hp)for $17. It was mechanically original with 3990 hours and you could tell they were real. The cosmetics and rubber were new including complete new cab interior including wheel and controls. Cab air had new 134 system including new compressor and hoses. You can't tell it from showroom new.

Why? Have wanted one for 25 years and when I saw this one I said I'm going to buy it. So I did. Am just now completing my new shop which will also serve as it's home. Can't leave something like that sitting out.

Guess this is why you work hard (and smart....get the right job with the right employer) all your life; to be able to do what you want when you retire.

Now was the price right? I'd say so when they are selling 44XX's up the road for $25k all the time (Southwest Auction Co. Inc....daily sales and once a month auction). Yeah I know a 44XX is a lot more tractor but I didn't want a lot more tractor, nor did I want a turbo. Mark

Nope. Runs the 401 cu in, naturally aspired. They turbo it for the 44xx along with other engines.

What was the line that W.C.Fields used?
"There is a sucker born every day"
Now, if it were an Oliver..... .
