I have posted a picture of the front part of the truck where you can make out the truck and the engine in the implements part of the pics page. See what you think. If you would like more pics please email me. Just put Duetz Chevy pics in the subject column. Thanks everyone for the info about it too. I really appreciate it!

James

Back in the late 70s and early 80s Deutz offered a kit that would allow you to retrofit just about any pick up truck. One local farmer here converted a late seventies F-250 over to Deutz power. I do remember hearing the farmer and his hired man complaing several times that they wished they had never even started this project. It seems that nothig really fit the way Deutz said it would, and the farmer ended up fabricating or modifying quite a few parts in order to make it fit. He even had to torch away a portion of the front frame crossmember because it interfered with the oil pan. They did finally get it up and running. I saw the truck several times for a few weeks, and then it just disappeared. Rumors were that the truck mysteriously caught fire one day while being used on the extreme far side of the farm.

There are a few places where this truck has seen some cutting, but it looked like it went right in other than that. I really have had no problems other than the five year old fuel that was in it when I bought it. Thank you for that info though.

wow! air cooled chevy! Say, looks like you got room to spare. that so? what was the biggest setback in the installation? keep spare oil where the radiator once sat?

you ought to send the info and picture to farm show magazine. they would publish it i bet.

I did not do the installation. I have found out it was custom built for a hog farm. There is more on the forum about it. If you do a search on Deutz you will see it. There isn't much room for anything in the bay after the air filter and heater assembly were installed.

I've had it about 6 months. Done a few small things like add lock out hubs and new tires. I've got a bed for it and I'm looking for a cab. It gets around 30 to 35 miles to the gallon if you can believe that. I'd drive it more but the heater needs a coil that is a bit pricey. I just haven't been able to bring myself to paying for it yet

If it's air-cooled, where do you get the hot water for the heater coil?

Its actually an ignition type coil. The heating system is made by a company called Webasto. They are commonly used in semis. It uses diesel fuel. It has a tank and pump to cycle the coolant through the heater core. I was surprised to find out that it has a 45,000btu rating. They want $250.00 for the coil. You can see why I am a bit reluctant yet. They also told me they are the only thing common to go out. The unit model 2010 sells for over $2000.00 new. I saw one on Ebay for $1500.00 starting bid.

I am not thinking of holding on to it. If someone waves some money in my face I'd part with it. (besides, the other half hates it. *laughs*)

Well, I've seen this particular engine on the internet selling used for $6000.00. This engine has some where between 2000 and 2500 hours from what I can figure. The tranfer case goes for anywhere from $750.00 to $1500.00. I would let it go for $5000.00 that includes the bed, the case of oil filters I got and a rear bumper.
