How much horsepower does it take to adequately run a 3 pt. snow blower, say a 6 or 7 foot unit? I have a JD 401 w/ 59 horsepower diesel. Will this run a 7 footer? Thanks for any help.

I've got a 401D with a loader, and yes you have enough H.P. but, the reverse on them is to fast to use with a blower. The 2 stage clutch helps but it is a pain in the a$$ when you get into some deep stuff.

Thanks for the advice. Sounds like I have plenty of tractor for a 7 footer, but just need to work it right.

To Butcher - your the first one I have run into that also has a 401D. Are you aware of any JD AG tractor equivelant to this tractor? Is the JD 2640A similar (many parts appear to be the same)? Would knowing this help with finding parts? Mine has the foot and hand throttles, power steering, reverser, Hi-Lo transfer case, JD 3/4 yard loader, cab w/ heater, and the 3 point appears to have originally had the draft control but many of the parts for this are now missing. Thanks for the help.

Hi Jerry.
I cant right off hand think of the ag equivilent to the 401 but there is one. Does yours have the shuttle for. and rev.? The best place i have found to find parts are the local construction equipment dealer in our area. That is hit and miss at best though. Murphy Tractor&equipment 319-235-7085. Even though I live in the Waterloo area, were they build J.D's, If you go into the local dealership looking for parts for an industreal they think you are nuts. I know this doesnt help much but I'll check on the ag part.

I have a 7' Lundell and it will make a 4020 JD Diesel at 90 Plus HP screem in heavy deep snow. A slow reverse and live PTO is a great help.

I use a 6' and a 6'6" on gas Ford 3000s about 45 HP and a 7' on a gas MM U303 about 55 HP. All can make the tractors work and require you to stop and let them catch up on the first pass. After that you can take partial cuts. A low reverse gear and live or independent PTO is necessary.

The main problem is to have a slow enough reverse gear. HP isn't much of a factor, just enough tractor so the front end doesn't get too light. I can fill the blower and be pushing snow with the auger with 35HP on a 7-1/2 ft blower.

A 35 sounds a bit light for a 7 1/2'. On the advice of a local equipment dealer I bought a used 5' for my MF35. When I located the charts for Lucknow blowers, 5' units were for 20 to 35 hp, 6 was o.k. for a 35, and I don't remember the rest.
