Hey guys I was talking to a friend of mine today and he told me about something that happened on his bosses "farm" the other day. This guy doesn't have so much a farm as simply a menagerie of "pet" animals, ranging from horses and ponys to emus to goats to lamas to cows to whatever. Anyway Wayne (another Wayne, not me)and one of his guys were down at the farm working the other day when the strangest/funniest thing happened. To put all the facts out there, the guy with him was wearing a leather jacket which may or may not have had something to do with what happened. Anyway, they said Wayne was doing something while the other guy stood behind him watching. Both were pretty engrossed in what was going on and didn't know what was fixing to happen til it did. One of the animals that roams around the acreage is a young bull. As the guy stood there watching he suddenly fealt a weight dropped on his shoulders from behind. Just about the time it happened Wayne turned around and low and behold the bull was doing his level best to mount the guy. One one level this is hillarious, especially when you picture the look on the guys face when he figures out what's going on, but on another it's kinda scary. I mean who wants to tell a bull, of any size, he's not gonna get what he wants, especially considering what he's wanting..... . My question is have any of you guys ever known of something like this to happen and if so what do you think could have provoked it. I wouldn't have though something like a leather jacket would have provided the proper smells to set the bull off, but who knows. Any of ya'll have any ideas?

When I was 17 or 18, I had a yearling Holstein heifer that weighed about 800 pounds mount me from behind in our barnyard. I weighed about 150 and was caught completely by surprise. Of course I folded right over and went to the ground, getting stepped on some in the process. My back bothered me for years after that--I probably should have gone to a doctor or chiropractor right away, but didn't. It didn't cripple me, but could have if things had gone a little different.

The heifer was one I had raised myself from a day old calf with a nipple pail, and she had got lots of attention. She was a pet that always followed me around. I thought she was extremely tame and would make a great gentle milk cow. I guess I trusted her more than I ever should have. I figured out later that she was coming into heat and maybe would not have done that to me if she was not so used to being around me.

She never did anything like that again, but we ended up selling her to a local dairy, where she was a quality producer for a number of years.

I learned something that day--EVEN TAME ANIMALS SOMETIMES DO UNEXPECTED THINGS THAT MAY BE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO YOU! I had always treated our Hereford bulls with due respect and caution, and never had trouble with any of them. But it was and is just as important to treat any animal carefully, especially if they are a lot bigger than you. You just don't completely ever know what they might do.

I am an artificial insemination technician. There have been times when I was breeding a cow or heifer in a freestall barn when another one would try to mount me. I have become quite good at kicking backwards.

I still remember being horrified to see a 5 year old kid leading a HUGE Ayrshire bull at the fair in the '60's, where I was also showing cattle. The parents thought it was "cute". Despite our opposition to government intervention, I think its a step in the right direction that these days, the parents would be arrested on the spot for child endangerment.

Yup--seen it happen several times. It's even more of a problem with women, particularly at certain times (I'm sure you can figure out which ones...). Saw a heifer in heat mount my grandfather once--knocked him to his knees when his back was turned. Luckily she lost interest when he fell, and didn't step on anything important.

Like Slorol said NEVER turn your back on any bull! My grandpa was gored to death by his young pet bull he was leading to the water trough. We used AI and had some bulls later for cleanup. I have never seen a bull that could be trusted at all times no matter how tame. Please be careful around bulls.

Almost the same story here. My Maternal Grandfather was gored by his prize Airshire Bull (complete with those wicked horns). Grandfather was tossed like a rag around the pen and just managed to pull himself into the manger when he happened to land nearby. He was laid open from mid thigh to ribs. He was never completely right physically of mentally afterwards. He did go on to cheat death several other times. He finally chose to die by not eating and drinking at age 89 a few months after Grandma passed away. Never trust any animal. The entertainment industry in books and video have brainwashed the public into thinking most animals are harmless, caring and have ideal human values.

Yup, unckle lost his hearing because they had to use such strong drugs on him to get the infections out of him after the always calm bull attacked him.

I have one right now that is just a perfect mostly angus, but he was bottle-fed & has a real attitude, he's on the next truck out of here. The old calm one I do not turn my back on either.

As an ex cattleman yes this is not an uncommon thing. Bulls mount each other, hay bales, or anything else as will a stud horse. I learned young that you never turn your back on a bull (leather jacket or not). The "little ones" weigh many times you and even in playing can inflict a lot of damage to ones self. Have you ever seen a couple of young bulls play volleyball with a big round bale?

The story you tell probably is true. The jacket is imported. In many parts of the world, urine is use in the leather tanning process. No doubt, some of it came from an animal in heat. The bull gets whiff of that and he is ready for business. Once I had a billy goat who would chase my wife.

Sorry, but thats just funny. I had a run in with a few dogs that thought my leg was apparently a female dog (poor dogs don"t have thumbs). I"ve been around a few bulls, boars, and rams, but never had that problem. Still got to have a chuckle out of it though.

Yup, I used to milk cows and they don't always behave politely. You just have to be careful around livestock.

My mother had a milk cow that was inordinately fond of the bush hog on my 8N. I was bent over it in the pasture one day working on the rear wheel when I heard something, looked around, folded back front legs coming down at my shoulder blades. I barely rolled out of the way.
