Was working with my MF 50C TLB today trying to slope my driveway. Been a wet yr. Trying to improve runoff and prevent having a 4x4 driveway again this yr.

Working along just fine and seen some sparks out the front end. Hmmm? Stopped the rig and went up front to investigate - found battery hold down rusted in half and broke. Got me some bungee cords and strapped it back down. Figured while in there I would retighten battery cables.

Now where is that stubby 1/2" wrench I use? Dern boys must have run off with it, I sure can't find it. Oh well, get the only handy 1/2" laying around it is about 6" long.

Cranking down the battery cables and KA-BLAM!!
Blew the top out of my big battery! Dam, there goes $$ down the drain. Luckily I just got acid on my hands and shirt.

Must have grounded the + cable side to the frame with that long wrench. I guess tomorrow I will rob battery from another rig and try to get the job done.

Just sharing :)

Yeah, things happen. I always removed my ring while at work. Well I am retired now so I wear my ring all of the time. I was using a 1/4" drive ratchet with a 6" extension to tighten the battery ground cable and I shorted between the posts with my ring filling in the gap. It burnt a gap out of the ring and I was able to pull it off fast. I was lucky and I can barely see where it happened but for a few weeks it was pretty sore. I knew better but I used the rachet and extension for the battery hold down and then went right to the cable.

Crem,

Sounds like the time my dad was putting a new radio in an old '64 Ford about 30 some years ago. He had one of them fancy schmancy metal flex-o-matic watch bands, and managed to get it between a hot wire and ground. Never saw a 6+ foot, 300+ pound guy shoot out from under a dash so fast. His wrist was still smoking when he slid out of the car. Left a nifty scar!

Shep, you were lucky it didn"t hit you in the face, many people have been blinded and disfigered by batterys. My Dad had had the charger on the battery in the Utility 330 one time, and he walked over to see if it would start. Only got acid on his shirt and pants, so he rubbed some baking soda in them good and only came up with a couple of holes.

Best way to tighten them down is unhook the - cable and tighten up the + then put the - back on and tighten, unless of course its a + ground
