My contract is about done. Just wondering how reliable a cell phone is for another two years...four yeaars total. I suppose with the way contracts read, it is just as well to get a new phone and be done with it.

What's a cellphone? Is that sort of like a fancy CB radio?

Mine usually outlast the phone companies "technology". I trade up every so often. Currently, I'm packing a Sprint Samsung flip-phone that's been in my pocket for 2-1/2 years. I recently upgraded my service plan, and got a credit towards a new phone. Plan is to give my current phone to my wife, and get a new one for me. She doesn't even want a phone, but it seems like a good thing to me, for her to have one. I've carried a cell phone since the days of the "brick phone". Todays phones are much more durable, provided you don't get a cheap-o.

One thing that helps your cell service, is to take the phone to a "service center" every now and then, and have them "update" the coverage area's. When they add new cell towers, the phone needs to be programed to look for them. It makes a huge difference in reception (at least in my area...)

Good idea for the wife to have a phone!

A local guy up here in the frozen north hit the ditch with his pickup, and then ran out of gas.

He wasn't carrying his cellphone because it had been shut off for non-payment. (My understanding is that even with the phone service shut off, head COULD have called 911!)

After a couple of days and 2 nights in the stalled pickup at temps that got as low as near -30, his parents found him (he's pushing 40 years old, himself)!

A week or 10 days in the hospital (no insurance) and he's out. Feet are still BLACK. May still face partial foot amputation, and loss of some toes.

All that pain and money, for the lack of a way to call for help!

Mine's two days old. Just got done replacing the old clunky Nokia with a new flip-phone of about half the size. Two phones, leather cases, car chargers and headsets set me back 40 bucks. I also took advantage of a new plan that saved me 5 bucks a month and gave me more airtime, so the savings will pay for the phones in 8 months.

The way the technology keeps evolving and the phones are built. I'd recommned getting a new one. Between home and work I've used several over the last few years, and so far my preference is definitly the LG I now have.

A lot of times anymore, they throw in a new phone for free with a new contract. Gotta weigh that out thow. Used to be 4 major cell companies, ATT, Nextel, Cell One, and Verizon, although Sprint was pretty good sized too. Purchasing phones from ATT and Nextel were $$$, but the monthly service was said to be cheaper than Cell One or Verizon, whom gave you the phones, but made up for it on the monthy service. Most of them use made in China Motorolas since all but closing down the fairly new operations in Harvard, IL. (built a mega facility, used it a couple of years, moved most of it to China, laid off thousands of employees. Thousands).

I worked for Illinois Bell, whom became Ameritech, and had our own cellular (Ameritech). Then Southwestern Bell (SBC) announced a proposed merger with us, but before doing so, the FCC told SBC must either sell off Cellular One or Ameritech Cellular so dont have as much a monopoly. They sold Ameritech Cellular to GTE, whom then became Verizon, then SBC merged with us (hostile take over really - do it or we'll smash you), then Cellular One merged with one of them other guys (another hostile take over), and became Cingular. Now our company's one big, massive, behemeth, ??? you've got me, but it aint customer focussed, that's for sure. Old days are gone.

I've got Verizon Cellular. Really makes the boss mad, but I tell him I'll consider moving when SBC gives me an incentive to do so, so until then, my family 7 digit dials me from Bristol, IN. throughout the week while I'm working in Illinois, and since I get 4000 anytime minutes per month with long distance free (period), I can see no incentive to move. Mine isn't cheap though, $75 flat per month for the last 3 or so years. But my retired Mom would chew that up in long distance calls per week, and doesn't have to now - she's retired, and it's my turn to cover her. Her long distance charges used to be about $150 per month - are zero last 3 or so years.

Mark.

Mark, are you on the Verizon nationwide plan? I am on nationwide, so I can call roam-free with free long distance anywhere in the U.S. but I pay $85 plus another $10 for Canadian coverage and I only have 600 minutes (ouch). I am told by the Verizon people that I can't get anything better in this area and still stay on the nationwide plan. Are they pulling my leg? I use my cell phone for all of my long distance calls and over a year's time my total phone bill for cell and land line is about the same as it was before I had the free long distance on the cell and had to make long distance calls on the land line.

I am on the nationwide plan, but sounds different than yours. I certainly get charged for roaming, and killed for that if happens again. I have two cells. Both were the 4000 minute nationwide all long distance free, for $75 per month each ($150 total). But was using land line to Indiana to call now ex-girlfriend, and monthly's were about $225. So really cut down going to the two cells. Originally, the cell that I used with her (had Indiana number so she could dial 7 digits to get me) had 600 anytime minutes and something like 160 long distance minutes, for about $40 per month. We hit and surpassed the 160 long distance minutes in no time, and the bill was MEGA $$$. So, had it changed to a flat 4000 minute including all long distance for flat rate of $75 per month. Was great, until we broke up. Gave that phone to Mom so she pays no long distance anytime to anyone, I pay the bills. Two Verizon cell phones, 4000 anytime minutes each, all long distance included, $150 per month combined. Is not cheap, but is better than $225 per month once paid.

When a sister went to Florida on vacation, Mom loaned her that cell. No problem with me, it's covered. NOT EXACTLY. Where ever she was, wasn't Verizon, so roaming as she called everyone a couple of times a day. Man when I got that bill. Oh well, she had fun.

Talk to most, and they'll tell you I've got a lousy (old marketing) deal. Others today blow it away. Still, I'm not paying $225, and my Mom's not paying $150 in long distance a month, so I'm saving $225 per month, and that's much much better.

Keep in mind, those are two seperate phones, both 4000 anytime minutes, long distance included, for $75 per month, each. Just cost me $150 total, because I own and pay for both. Still saving saving $225 per month, and that provides for lots of hydraulic fluid for the Deere. And if I'd fix them leaks, could use for something else. LOL.

About 6 months, and it won't be getting any older. Had a 3.5 watt analog in my truck, paid for 20 minutes a month (minimum plan)rarely used more than 5. When it died, couldn't see paying nearly $30 a month for a phone I wasn't using, so went with a trackfone.

Minimum purchase is 10 minutes, expire whether used or not after 90 days. Every time I call to recharge it turns into a runaround and a giant pain. STILL wasn't using all my minutes, so the last time they expired, I threw the damn thing in the center console, and it'll still be there in 20 years when I junk the truck as far as I'm concerned.

They're a hassle to use, coverage sucks in Downeast Maine, the signal stinks, you can hardly be understood and I don't need to be in touch that much anyway.

In fact, I ENJOY not being connected.

(In case I was too subtle, I HATE cell phones...)

Ha Ha Ha Ha. I work for the phone company and they took our company cells, but left us pagers. Guess they figure that we can or will grab someone's, anyone's line with a buttsett somewhere. Yeah, right. Told the boss get me some sticks and greasy rags, that way when he pages me, I'll go up in the bucket and wave smoke signals from a burning grease wrag on a stick, because not using my personal cell for company business and not getting paid back for it, and not borrowing anyone's line. Get paged, lower the bucket, drive around until find a payphone (rare these days), and call him collect. I think I'm gonna give the guy a heart attack one of these days. Oh well, new owners and bosses, new rules. Occasionally toss him a roll of TUMS, and say "Just in case you feel the urge to page me later". LOL.

That's no problem I leave mine off till I want to use it which is not very often. My montly bill is around $8.00 a month and I use between 0-10 mins a month. I have it for emergency reasons and that is it. I also take it out on fires to stay in contact with the family in case I am needed at home for one!! Mark H.

I have an audiovox and hate it. Poor battery life, poor reception, poor usability.

When my wife's contract expired, she defaulted into an automatically renewing month by month contract with US cellular. She kept paying the same monthly fee with the same minutes but didn't have to lock herself into a new two year contract. When her old phone finally did puke a year after the contract expired, we signed up for another two year contract. We happened to sign up again just as US Cellular brought back thier night time calling starting at 7 o'clock. Had she renewed her contract when it expired we'd still be tied into a 9 o'clock starting time.

Better check with your provider before trying this.

Of the many phones I have had, the Samsung seems to be the toughest. I got the first Samsung in Aug of 03 and it worked well for a few months and then it began having a glitch where sometimes the person on the other end of the line couldn't hear me. At first, one tap on the phone would jar things loose and then they could hear me fine. Well, things got progressively worse to the point where I really had to bang on it to get a voice connection. This was when I was on the wheat harvest the next summer and I could't find a Verizon dealer where I could get a new phone, so I just kept whacking away on it with my pliers whenever I wanted to make contact. I did this until I came home and could get a new one. I got another Samsung because I figured if the first one could take all of that abuse constantly for that many months, it's worth giving that brand another try. The new one is six months old now and works flawlessly. I threw the old one on the shelf and it layed there for five months until my granddaughters found it during christmastime. The battery still had enough charge left in it to give them several hours of fun (torture for us) playing music with it.

Motorola Tracfone. About 1 year old. Real happy with phone and service. I don't use it much, just 10-15 minutes a week. I still have a Motorola bagphone I got new back in 1994. I don't suppose it is even compatible with today's systems. Probably couldn't find any wood or coal to run it on. Technology changes so fast, I wonder what we'll be using in another 10 or 12 years. Had a small storm up here yesterday - there was a pickup that went off the road in the middle of no-where. He was grateful I had a phone.

I have a Motorola V265 - love it. Better range, less dropped calls than the V60. Camera phone (could care less about that), voice dial I really like.

I just got a new one and really like it. Voice dial and all!. I was planning on keeping my old one. The problem I had with the old girl is that it wouldn't handle the new technology in cells. I have the same plan basicly but my coverage about doubled because the old phone couldn't use the new towers. So you may increase coverage and pay less over all with a new phone/contract, I did. With rebates I got one phone free(Yah right) anyway. It took me a day to program the danged thing though.
