Howdy folks,

Had a real scare on Monday morning. We had a temp around 10-15 degrees out and it was some pretty dry air so one of those real cold mornings that puts the chill in ya (at least if you don't have that kind of cold often). I had fed my dog buster earlier in the morning and he was doin alright. He doesn't go in at night much even though we have a nice woodshed where he can get in out of the cold. Well, I busted up his frozen water and tossed out the ice before refilling it. Buster loves to chew on ice and it didn't really strike any red lights in me at that time. Later on in the morning dad went out to the shop to get something and found buster layin on the shady side of the shop in the snow. He was laying in real funny position and acted stiff as a board. Dad hollered for me and we got him into the shop, built up a nice warm fire, and I started rubbing him down with a good warm sheet. It took a while but he came around and got to moving around like his normal self. If dad hadn't been out there it would have been the end of the line for buster. Needless to say he now stays inside at night until this cold spell passes whether he likes it or not. So, when you hear 'em talkin about checkin on pets during cold weather it ain't really something to take too lightly. I almost lost my best buddy because of that cold. God bless.

The other morning it was 35 degrees below zero, who knows what windchill. We just leave our dogs out with no problem. They seem to find a good place to sleep, usually in a hay shed with round bales. We have a St. Bernard and a treeing Walker, short hair and long hair. Every day regardless of the temp they are out with the tractor when I feed hay. They love to check under the bales I move. I don't doubt your story but the cold doesn't affect our dogs, seems they and the cattle always know how to get out of the wind.

Even more important are your Kids! in reply to old fashioned farmer, 01-18-2005 20:50:12
Our pets are important, but even more so should be our children.
There have been 11 children lost in house fires in this part of the state within the last couple weeks. The latest was last Saturday morning about 30 miles from here. Four children, ages 3 to 7 died when the house burned. The fire started after a blanket came in contact with a propane sunflower heater that was being used in a bedroom.
Most people wouldn't trust a device like this around their pets...but think heating a kid's bedroom is OK! Lets pray that we can use as much common sense with our children as we would our pets.

When we lived in southern New Mexico, our Dachshound stayed outside and slept in his doghouse that I insulated with padded carpet and heated with a 60 watt bulb. I heard a ferocious barking at 2:00 a.m. and went out to check on him, thinking another dog had gotten in the yard and attacked him. Nope - the light bulb had burned out. As soon as I replaced the bulb he dashed into his house, curled up and went to sleep! He did like his creature comforts.
