When I try to use the hydraulics, I am forced to engage the PTO to lift. Is this normal? It will not lift without PTO engaged.

I for one have to wonder why so many people think the little Fords are so great? You can buy tractors twice as good as those little Fordsfor half the price that they bring. They are cute pulling a float in the homecoming parade.

Yep, that's the way they work. The hydraulic pump is driven off the pto so to get any hydraulic pressure you have to engage the pto. Then, because the 9N has non-live pto you have to have the clutch pedal up so the pto will go 'round so the hydraulic pump will pump so the lift will lift. That's what's known as non-live hydraulics. Ford upgraded to live hydraulics in '53 with the NAA/Golden Jubilee when the hydraulic pump was moved to the side of the engine and was engine-driven. Live pto didn't show up in the Ford line until 1955.

They won"t work with the clutch in either.

Suggest that you spend some time over on the Ford 9n,2n,8n board and get a feel for some of the quirks that these old machines have.

The n series tractors didn't have live PTO or hyds. which means if you want the lift to work you have to have the PTO engaged and the clutch pedel up
