Hello,

Three questions:

-what"s the difference between a six and twelve volt generator? Will a six volt generator put out 12 volts with a 12 volt regulator?

-my Case 401 service manual says Case used both a Delco and an Autolite setup for the generator and voltage regulator. Did the Delco setup have the voltage regulator mounted directly on the generator or remotely mounted? Some one mounted a prestolite generator with the regulator mounted remotely on mine at sometime, Case never used one did they? It"s interesting to note that the Autolite amp output was listed in my service manual at 4 amps and the Delco at 40 amps could this possibly be a misprint? Any one have an original setup they would like to sell?

-second question. I always see guages listed on ebay for the earlier letter series Cases. How different, if any, are the 400 series?

Thanks,

Mark

For the same shaft speed a 12 volt generator will have windings with half the wire cross section and twice as many turns as a 6 volt generator. However, if you turn the shaft of a 6 volt generator twice as fast while holding 6 volts on the field it will put out double the voltage. If you self excite it then you won't have to double the speed to get double the voltage though the fields will run hotter and the speed increase will depend on field core saturation.

When you cut the wire size in half, you also cut the current rating. A 6 volt generator doing 12 volts still has the same current rating it had at 6 volts.

To get good results from a 6 volt generator on 12 volts you need a smaller pulley on the generator and a 12 volt regulator.

I don't know about Case specifics.
