I once saw a picture of a tractor that could also double as a car and take the family to town. I think it was maybe a Minneapolis Moline from the thirtees. Does anyone have information?

Believe you're referrin to the Moline UDLX and it's kind. But in Europe many of the tractors used have cabs, suspension and very high road gears and besides"tractorin" may be the families primary or secondary vehicle. The Unimog AWD truck is also very popular as a tractor and can be equipped with front/rear 3pt or fast hitches and multiple hydraulic circuits.Another more tractorish current rig, called the FasTrack or such from Europe is an AWD Ag tractor with nearly 50mph road capability for pulling grain trailers etc to market...Lotza interesting variations on "Tractors" out there,if ya dig a little.

There was a guy around here several years ago who tool a Chevy LUV and hooked the cab and frame to a Ford Rear end and transmission. It even still had the tractor gear shift back around where the center of the bed would be. I think he used to get back in woods where he was logging. Last time I saw it it was sitting on a trailer heading to Mississippi.

Saw a picture of something in "Farm Show" a few years ago where a farmer took a 1 or 1 1/2 ton gmc truck and welded (glued, shoe-horned) it on to what I think was a Cockshutt 40 rear end. I think he might have used it pull wagons and do chores.

Don't remember the details, but I seem to recall reading (on here) that Buick made such a combination..... ...

It never caught on for several reasons- one being the reluctance of farmers to operate a cabbed tractor in comfort while his neighbors were freezing their tushes on the "regular" tractors of the day. The other, more practical, problem was that you could buy both a new car and a new tractor for the same price as the Comfortractor.

This is a ford motor company picture of henry trying out a car/tractor combo, very unsuccessful, but he was determined to come up with a decent tractor for farmers, and developed the Fordson.

Tim,

I saw that episode....Coolest thing I ever saw. Only thing it needed was a stereo! Wish I had one. Get done disking, then just unhook, slap 'er into road gear and slip into town for a cool one!

Another interesting unit is the tractor axle that can be installed in the rear of a Model T, apparently those were several sold, but not many survived. It was made so that it could be swapped out in about an hour.

Back in the "olden days", Sears & Roebuck had a plethora (lots of) attachments that could be used to convert yer Model T ford into anything you needed on the farm. Even a snow-mobile! If you peruse some of the antique Ford sites, they usually have booklets for sale on this subject. One place is Snyder Antique Ford Country, in New Springfield, Ohio. I know they had booklets on the subject. You could use the car during the week for farm or business duties, then use it on Sunday for church or riding around visiting the neighbors and relatives. Most of the Model T tractors i ever saw were converted Model T trucks, or cars. Folks would install a Model A or later truck tranny, and a truck type rear end, with the truck wheels, and use it solely as a tractor! They would take off most of the body, leaving only the cowl to support the steering column! One was conveerted into a vegetable garden row tractor, by narrowing the front and rear axles down to fit between the rows, with an auxiliary tranny in it, and no tires, just the wheels and rims, with cleats welded onto the back wheels! I have owned 4 of them in the past! Some worked well, one was a misfit! All got sold or used for parts for my T roadster! And, it is gone too! Too many headaches, too much work to restore it for the third time! And, i have lost my interest in restoring old cars, etc. by: rustyj

Check your google under "unimog"... since 1948...2/4/4 wheel diff lock, three point hitches front/rear,pto's 540/1000 front /
rear, 55mph, full coil spring suspension, etc,etc,...worlds fastest tractor...have owned them since 88--still used mostly in Europe.
see if this link works....
