I am in the process of rearranging my shop layout....what shop storage
method do you like the best in your shop. For example....do you have
work benches with storage under it...shelves on the walls, old school
lockers, ect...I am thinking of building work benches with storage
under...and configure the benches with openings for welders, grinders,
bandsaws and other tools with designated storage and use areas. I have
been racking my brain trying to develop the best design, then thought
"why not ask what others like best in their shops..."

Thanks

For me, one end of my wall mount bench just piled up with stuff. A certain clear space area seemed to emerge. (I have a free standing ww bench also.) I'd recommend minimal bench space and more floor to "reach-height" storage cabinets.

Pegboard is well worth using on all walls, it will save lots of space.. & stuff is easy to find & retrieve, easier than digging in tool boxes, drawers & shelves.....

in my workshop/garage i have a workbench 18' long, 3' deep and about 3' high (tall enough for me to work on something without hunching over). one end has some drawers under it and the rest is open for storage of bigger items like a shop-vac and generator, etc. i have shelves and cabinets hung on the walls above the bench, but they start about 16" above the benchtop. that way i have the entire top surface to spread things out on, plus i have storage within easy reach. one note about storing stuff under the bench. my dad put in a bench similar to mine and started with shelves under it. it was a big pain in the arse to reach stuff at the back of the shelves. you were always bending over or getting on your knee to reach stuff, plus it was dark. after that we only went with drawers under the bench or open storage for large items.

i also do some woodworking and made openings in the benchtop for a router and planer. the router just drops down out of sight and the planer lifts out and a piece of plywood fits in the space to cover the hole to make it level with the benchtop. having the area underneath open makes it easier to clean the mess up from wood chips.

I use old frigs, keeps things dry and almost condensation proof also. Another nice thing is you can pick them up for free just for the time it takes to haul them off. Also old freezers chest type work good to store feed in.
