I am working on a ford series 800 model 850. front mounted hydraulic pump, it is a gear pump I have 3 pumps two are right hand and one is left hand they are all Prince pumps. the pump that the guy that I bought the tractor from had installed a left hand pump. the crankshaft rotates clock wise. if I remember right on a gear pump the oil enters into the large port and is pushed thru the gears and out the small port. PLease correct me if I am wrong. so if you have left hand pump turning clock wise you will be trying to tack a sucktion on the discharge side. right or wrong??? thanks for your help Jer

Two pop is correct. You always use a left hand pump as a crankshsft driven pump. On the other stuff it depend internally if you have a "drain trap" on each side or just one side of the wear plates. Questions?

the crankshaft turns clockwise.that would be looking at the enginefrom in front of the radiator.the left hand pump turns counterclockwise.you hook up the pump on the front, with the crankshaft facing the pump shaft.if you sit on the tractor seat, both the engine and the pump are turning ccw

Hey Jerry, your right in that the oil should enter through the larger port and exit through the smaller port. Unless I misunderstood what you were saying though, the oil doesn't actually go "through" the gears. Instead it rides around the outside of each gear in the pockets created between the teeth and the pump housing. Regardless of that though, you are right in saying that a pump turning the wrong direction is actually putting the suction on the pressure port and discharging through the suction port. Unless it has some sort of internal valving that would prevent it, the pump will pump this way, the main thing is at high RPM there is the chance that the pump will start cavitating from low oil flow.

Forgot something. I'm not sure on the Prince pumps but some pumps have bleed off ports from the pressure side to lube the bearings. If the pump is installed where it turns backwards then there is no pressure to these ports therefore no lube to the bearings...which ain't a good thing..
