Speaking of Ford trucks from the previous post, does anyone have any knowledge or experience with the Ford 6.9 V10? How durable are they and what to look for? Looking at a F250 4x4 99 model that is priced right with 52,000 miles. I like diesel but this is so much cheaper than any diesel I've found. I'm sure mpg won't be great but it will be driven limited miles pulling a trailer.

i have a 2002 F350 crewcab with the 8' bed (yes, i know it is 22' long) with 30,000 miles on it. i get about 12.5MPG with mostly highway and some around town, and that is running about 70-72MPH. if i keep it at 60-65 i can get closer to 15MPG, but it always seems to drift up to 75 before i know it. the week before Christmas i hauled a 5200 lb John Deere D for about 1000 miles with a regular tow-behind trailer and averaged 9.3MPG. a diesel would've gotten better mileage, but diesel fuel was about 25 cents per gal more expensive. i have never had a problem with the truck and the fact the V10 was only about a $600 option over the V8 made the V10 choice the obvious one. if i only used the truck for hauling a 5th-wheel trailer long distances i probably would've went with a diesel.

Had a Ford V-10 in my new 99 motorhome. I'm not sure if this was just a bad one but, what a junker. I was getting 750 miles per quart of oil. No smoke, just used a lot of oil. Also, it knocked like crazy when I first started it. I changed over to Shell Rotella 15-40 and that seemed to take care of the knock. Took it to a dealership in Indiana for a number of Ford related issues and the back lot was full of new motorhomes with V-10s waiting for new motors. The problems may have been resolved in the last few years. In any case, there were so many Ford related issues with the motorhome that Ford motor co bought it back. That was it for me with their V-10.

I looked at the V10 when I bought a new truck. I didn't think there was enough additional displacement to counter act the extra to cylinders. I bought a GMC with an 8.1L V8 gas with a 6spd manual tranny. I really love this truck and I got 15mpg last weekend with the cruise set on 65 mph.

I have a "99 Powerstroke and a "95 460; Dad has a "04 V10. Diesel is the only truck we pull with, Sometimes pull a car trailer with the 460 can"t complain--167,000 never touched the motor, bought new. Diesel 175,000 put glowplugs in once. The V10 only has 4,400 miles on it so I can"t say much but it seems like a nice truck. If you like gas engines in trucks, the V10 has the power for sure!

I think they are a good motor, and recomend them to any one. In heavy pulls, ours gets around 8-10mpg. On the highway, 15 mpg period. Every tank Of highway miles has been this. Our GMC with the 350 can't be begged or beat into better than 13 mpg on the highway. As far as power, the 6.8 makes GM's 350's and 454's look foolish. I have had experience with many different trucks and motors, but this is a good engine. The diesels are great to, but just as you stated, the V-10 is cheaper to buy, and much cheaper to maintain. A friend of mine had a powerstroke and lost the motor at a little over 100,000. $10,000 later he had an engine back in it again. Diesels are much more expensive to maintain and repair. You have to decide what best fits your needs.

I don't have one, but friend of mine is on his second one. He uses it for a snowplow truck. I don't think he has had much trouble with them, but boy do they ever like gas! Look under the hood of one. That V10 really fills up the engine compartment.

A friend bought one to pull a trailer ,{6000lb} was the thirstest truck he ever owned. 120 miles on a tank of fuel! He sold it 6 months later at a loss of $10000. I also have seen posts of these engines blowing out spark plugs. Go diesel, the extra money up front will come back at sale time. Dave

the v-10 didn't have a problem with the spark plugs, it was the 4.6 and the 5.4 in the '98-01 years. if you put the new design ford spark plug you could save a head. the new plug has three times more thread on it so it holds better in the head. also when you change the plugs they need to be tourqed to spec and then it's a good idea to go back and retourqe number three on the pass. side after a few hundred miles( hence the one that always blows out!)

caseyc, I have a 5.4 in a 99 F150. This is the first I have heard of the plug problem. Is this kept quite are is there a SB out by Ford on correction or recall? I have 48000 miles but will listen for a hiss from now on.
Thanks,
CLW

it usually happens when a person does their first spark plug change. the post below explains it very well. i'm just a ford parts guy, not an actual mechanic. when it comes time to do the plugs i highly recommend motorcraft plugs because of their new design. i have yet to see a aftermarket plug hold, atleast in our dealer. it sure wouldn't hurt to just do them now so you have no worrys down the road.

Actually the plug problem is in the head - not the spark plug itself. On the early 4.6, 5.4 & 6.8 (2000 and older or so) there is only two or three threads in the head to hold the plug in - and its aluminum on top of that. Most (if not all) blown plugs occure after replacing the factory plugs, the torque must be carefully measured, only 12 or 15 pounds. About what you'd use on a lawn mower.

One can easily strip the threads of the head, or cross thread the the plug without ever knowing it. There's even debate as to the use of antiseize lube on the threads lowers the torque specs even more. Given that you can't start the plug with your fingers (too deep of well) replacing them can be a costly venture and a huge PIA.

aFORDable, Only real problem with a V10 is they are somewhat more thirsty than a 460 , but turn our a whole lot more work, Most V10 owners I know get about 12 MPG as a rule. I still think that the DSL is a better way to go. My $.02.
Later,

I've heard they run great. We pulled with a 460 until we got our diesel, and now when we use a 460, we wonder how we ever hauled anything.
