I have a copper cored, brass tanked radiator from a thermo-syphon,(non water pump),system. It is very sound, and not leaking, has never been patched, and is not full of crud inside the water tubes. The problem is that the radiator has a lot of caked on grease and dirt on the sides and some on the fins. How is the best way to clean the outside and not destroy the copper core and the brass tanks. Would like to then paint it black. It is for a 1949 Earthmaster tractor. Thanks in advance for your advice. Gene Davis

check with local heating and cooling guys and get a gallon of core cleaner. they use this stuff to clean central heat and air units. works great for cleaning the outsides of radiators. used it on several combines over the last year. one word of warning, it has been known to take off paint, so be careful. local lowe's store has it

We have a hot water pressure washer that we use for such things. It is about the only thing that will take grease out of radiator in combination with soakings of gasoline in between. We bought a wide fan so as to not damage the radiator and set the thermo setting to 240 degrees. This is of course if you can"t find someone to boil it out, they are getting finicky on that practice anymore. I would search out a buddy or see if you can time a couple of dirty cars/trucks, and tractors to do at the same time you could rent one.

I's say take it to a radiator shop and have them boil it. have it pressure checked while your there.

Thanks for the info. Will probably let the local radiator shop clean and paint it for me. Gene
