Just exactly how does a lock up torque converter work? Why would you want it to lock up? Just wondering about it. Thanks

WHEN IT LOCKS UP IT GIVES YOU DIRECT DRIVE OF ENGINE TO TRANS INSTEAD OF FLUID DRIVE.IT LOWERS YOUR RPM AT CRUISING SPEED SO TO SPEAK..LUCAS

A lock up torque convertor typically contains a hydraulically operated clutch that "locks up" or disables the torque convertor once you've reached cruising speed.

This eliminates "slip", resulting in a least heat generated in the transmission, and better fuel economy.

Early versions were operated by a combination of the hydraulic valve train in the transmission, and often a vacuum switch that would allow lockup only at lighter engine loads.

Nowadays, the engine computer decides when, and how firmly the convertor clutch should lock up.

So your saying that some today can lock up part way if the need calls for it? Thanks.

Some are operated by a pulse width modulated solenoid, and allow to slip a controlled amount.
