what causes the thick smoke and tailpipe driping oil at start up. Seems to get over it in about 30 seconds. I am thinking a dropped valve guide leting the oil on top of the head leak into the head when it sets overnight.

just replaced the head on my 88 f150 300 cu in 6 this last labor day weekend for the same problem. thought the head gasket was out...turned out there was a one inch crack in the head in #3 hole. engine has never been overheated, don't know how it happened. have talked to several engine buildrs and they did'nt think it was possible to crack a 300 head.
before i swapped the head it would blow white smoke all over at start up and if you smell the exaust it has a alcohol smell.

Have seen several 300`s with pluged drain back, so that the rocker arm cover fills up when running, and when shut off, the oil runs down the guides before it can drain back.

Is this in pick up ? If so ,,checkvac line from transmission modulator .if it's all swelled up and oily when you pull it off, you have leaking modulator. Engine vacuum pulls trans fluid into intake ,,smokes ,drips out tailpipe etc. Besure and check all vacuum lines as tranny fluid seems to soften them up and they will fall off later .

Good idea, Bryan, to check if he is losing automatic transmission fluid.

Unless the head has previously been rebuilt it has no valve guides to "drop". The "guides" are created by simply machining holes in the head casting.

Excessive valve "guide" wear is certainly a possiblity, as well as hardened and broken umbrella valve seals.

Remove the valve cover and try to wiggle the valves side-to-side to see if any move excessively more than the rest. (You'll have to turn the engine over a time or two, so each valve can be checked when it's closed.

You can see the valve stem seals through the coils of the springs. If they're brittle, loose on the stem, or broken, they can be replaced without removing the head, by applying air pressure to one cylinder at a time, with an adapter screwed in the spark plug hole. The air pressure keeps the valves from dropping as you compress each spring, remove the keepers, and retainer and spring, and replace the seal, and then reassemble.
