you REALLY wanna get away? in reply to Want to get away from hom, 01-04-2005 14:54:30
You really wanna get away? I spent three months in Germany working on a dairy farm when I was 19. Best experiance of my life thus far. Best part was that I got to travel out of the country for nothing because I was awarded a scholarship. I also got paid while I was over there.

Link

I also went on the harvest crew the next year. It is definately something to do once in your lifetime.

Sometimes you just need to get away from home to figure out how much you love it. I've left Lancaster several times and am away right now but would love nothing better than to go back down there and run my Grandpas farm.

P.S. - I forgot somethin in reply to Want to get away from hom, 01-04-2005 14:54:30
Forgot to mention that I left that job under not too friendly circumstances. Being young and hot-headed, I quit one morning over something I can't even remember. My boss and his wife were more understanding than I deserved, and we're still friends almost 50 years later. Stay cool and "measure twice and saw once" as my ol' pappy used to tell me!

There've been some good suggestions offered here, so I won't add anything but to say go for it. I did the same thing myself at a few days shy of 20, back in 1957, leaving college because grades were so bad I was afraid to go home after the spring semester. I learned a lot about life that year, and did go back to college a year later.

One piece of advice, though...make sure what you're going TOWARD is not worse than what you're getting away FROM. Unfortunately, the only way you'll find out is to "just do it", as they say in the Nike ads. You'll do fine, just have an open mind, listen more than you talk, and give your boss a little more than he's paying you for. I know it may sound old-fashioned, but it worked for me and it will work for you.

Nathan: If it is harvest excursion you are interested in I think I can find you a few names and address of employers. I have talked with one of these guys. He starts combining in Texas and runs all the way north into Canada and then back to southern mid west for corn and beans. He is looking for young and adventursome lads. One item he puts in his job adds is welding experience an assett.

I don't have the names right now but their job adds will soon start. The guy I talked with didn't want anything to do with two old farmers and their wives travelling by 24' air stream. He said. "Old guys like are too independent."

You send me an e mail, and I will watch adds here for you. I think the good employers must have some kind of deal whereby a percentage of crew are American and Canadian, as they seem to cross the border with few hurdles. Another big employer is the east coast low bush blueberry harvest. New England in the US and Maritime provinces of Canada. They use automated harvesters and the New England harvest starts about 3 weeks before the Maritime harvest. Many of the same machines and people there cross the border as well. I have trucked a few loads of berries away from these guys, they are always a mix crew of Canadian and American.

Hugh, My Uncle, upon his return form the Marine Corps in 1946, hooked up with a threshing crew in Texas and continued north into Sask. It was an experience he never forgot nor ever regretted, and he has blessed us with stories of his adventure for nearly 60 years now. Even if farming does not become a lifelong avocation, like military service, it can be an incredible experience for a young man, and one that he will carry with him and share with his grandchildren. Whether it is working on a dude ranch, a dairy farm, or crop farming, there is much a young man can learn about life and being out on his own from such an experience.

Maybe try some of the regional weekly farm papers. In our area the "Farm Forum" always has some interesting "Help Wanted" ads relating to farm and ranch work. If you contact them, I'm sure they would send you a copy.
Good Luck to you...

Nathan, you seem like a nice young man but I can imagine you might meet up with some pretty lousy employers on the internet.Maybe you could start a welding business.Bad time to get real interested in a career in say the Marine Corps. How bout trucker?Fuel costs probably too high.Hang in there, you will find a traveling job . Farms by me many illegal immigrants may being doing this type job you seek.Even driving equipment.Good Luck to you.

Cowman: I knew that by your third word into the sentence. I also knew you were testing him, young lads didn't call me Mad Man MacKay for nothing. I was standing one night where I wasn't noticed in the dark. Some young lads were discussing who the best farm employers were. I got an earfull that night. Heard one young lad say to another," If you don't smarten up MacKay is going to fire you, he is damn fussy when it comes to seed bed preparation. You may think his bark is bad, but it will never match his bite." Gosh that saved me a lot of words, the guy did heed the advice given.
