Just wanted to know if anyone have had any bad experiences with with these things. My elderly father has one, a 2003 model, that just lost the engine. He has only put 7000 miles on this thing and the engine comes apart. I don't think it has ever been above 60 miles per hour. So far, the dealership is replacing the engine although they say it will be Feb. before a new one gets in. I don't know whether to urge him to get rid of it as soon as he gets it back or not. Is this just a fluke, or are Ranger's prone to engine problems? Any comments?

I bought an '88 Ranger back in 1992. it was a real mess! And needed everything repaired or replaced. I only paid $800 for it. It had the 2.0 4 cyl. in it, 5 speed tranny. The former owner really beat that truck to death. Well, i put $500 in parts in it, and it ended up to be a reliable piece! I drove it for ten years, but in the end, i gave it to a friend for his farm, to haul stuff around the farm. I called it my 10 mile truck, because, if it broke down more than 10 miles from home, it would cost more than it was worth to tow it home! And, as near as i can figure, it had close to 300,000 miles on it! Then, a friend asked me if i knew anybody looking for a cheap pickup, a 91 Ranger, 5 speed, 2.3L engine, $500! Well, guess what--its now being driven by me! And, it has only 185,000 + miles on it! Doesn't burn any oil, runs great, i can go further than ten miles in it, and next spring it gets the bed sides fixed! by: rustyj

Just got finished talking with the service manager and the Ford customer service representative. It seems as if they are planning to put a remanufactured engine in it anyway. I raised cain, but in the end that is probably what will happen. I know some of you guys here are dedicated Ford fans, but this is the kind of garbage they pull. I swore off of them years ago after I got stuck with one of their lemons. I only wish my Dad had done the same.

I have an 01 with 4.0 SOHC, and while I have only put about 35k on it, it has been a great rig. I frequently pull a trailer weighing up to 5k and it does great. Yes i do have brakes on the trailer.

We had an Aerostar van (Same engine as Ranger) that had almost 200,000 when we traded it away. We never touched the engine, it didn"t use or leak a drop of oil. I don"t know if it makes a difference, but it burned ethanol for all but 3 tanks.
We traded it for a 2000 Explorer. 107,000 miles later, the engine still goes strongly. I think it"s had nothing but ethanol, but I don"t know.
We bought my truck from the son of my great-great uncle. He never got over 60. We had a few problems, a mechanic said the engine had no vacuum, and it needed replaced. I"ve put 50,000 on it, and it still runs good. ("95 F150 4x4 302 V8)
I"m a Ford guy, and try to keep current on Ford vehicles. I"ve never heard of one having engine problems, and they are popular here in NW Missouri.

We're on our second ranger now. The first was a '92 with a 2.3 4 cylinder. It was a great little truck until it was smashed. The '98 we have now isn't bad either. It has a 3L V6. Both were/are over 100K miles with no engine trouble other than a tune-up and semi-regular oil changes. Both were driven hard. The only complaint is the FWD on both, as the hubs have been quite troublesome. I wish Warn would make a kit to convert from these vacuum locks to manual. It would save a lot of expense and misery.

I have a 94 Ranger with the 4.0 engine. I have 158,000 on the truck and it NEVER (and I mean NEVER) has used any oil. As far as the engine goes, all I've ever done to it is replace the cam timing sensor at about 135,000 miles. Everything else had been routine stuff like brakes, radiator, water pump, etc. all stuff you should expect to do or should do as you get up into the higher mileage area.

This has been one of the best vehicles I've ever owned and I'm not about to get rid of it. I really need a bigger one with extended cab since my grandson is getting to the age where he will go with me to all of the tractor events.

But I have nothing but good things to say about this truck--body still good, still "torquey" and I still like it.

I have a 90 Ranger 2.9L. The odometer broke back in 1995 when it had 165,000 on it. I'm just guessing that it has near to 300K on it now and is still running strong. I can't say anything about newer engines but they should have kept the 2.9 around.

The 2.9L is a great engine, about 150hp (good for a Ranger) and will last 200K with basic maintenance. Around 200 though you want replace the timing chain. Most of the ones I see parked are because the tranni failed and the rest of it wasn't worth the $1500 it would take to fix it.

I ran our 91 Ranger up to 160K and sold it to my nephew to drive in college - he's put another 20K of HARD miles on it and it still isn't burning any oil and it gets 22+ MPG.

I have 4 Rangers.A 94,95,96 and a 2000.All have been great.None use oil.All have 120,000 to 170,000 miles.Had to put clutch in one.My 2000 Ranger had to have the shift motor put in the 4 wheel drive. All get around 20 miles to the gallon. We have worked the he!! out of them. Each work on the farm hard everyday.I think the 4 cylinder is bullet proof. One has the 3.0 in it.Gutless but trouble free.Change the oil..... ..and drive. If you are having problems with them ....YOU are not maintaining them or driving them right.

As I mentioned, he had two other ones with no problems out of either with well in excess of 100,000 miles. This 'POS' has 7000 miles and has been dealer maintained. That is why they are not arguing with the warranty. My sister had her Ford serviced at a local service station and Ford gave her a big hassle about the engine.

My'84 Ranger only has 170,000 miles on it and it's already on it's second motor! ;-) On a serious note though, my brother has a '01 Ranger that has been trouble free...and he could tear up an anvil with a rubber hammmer!

My elderly Father, now deceased, lost several engines before we realized he was driving with the automatic in the wrong gear, and overspeeding the engine, because his hearing was bad enough that he did not realize it. We solved that problem by installing a REV LIMITER to hold the engine RPM's down to a safe level, when he tried to get up to highway speed in the wrong gear.

Now, I'm not saying that's a problem for your Dad, but it's a possibility.

Also, a lot of late model vehicles have a rev limiter built into the engine computer, don't know if that's the case with your Dad's pickup, though.

we have and '89 ranger and have no engine probelms with it or any probelms for that matter. i use it quite a bit to pull my 1950 jd b on a car trailer and it doesnt seem short of power. but its starting to leak quite a bit around the oil pan. but that'll be a project for a rainy day. i have never heard of any engine probelms on the new rangers.

This is the third one he has had. He traded in a '88. I don't know how many miles it had on it, but it had to be a bunch. He never had any out of the ordinary trouble with it. I am hoping it is just a fluke. My sister had a relatively new Explorer that blew an engine at 30,000 miles. Ford didn't want to replace it at first, but finally did after they kept it about 2 months. She had it back for about 3 months when the new engine started acting up. She promptly traded it in on a Chevy.

What engine was in the Ranger? The 3.0 is not known for its power but its usually good for 200 as long as you change the oil once in the while. About the only thing that kills it is the water pump fails and the engine overeats warping the heads. The 4.0 is pretty good too, haven't heard to many engine problems with it, usually its the transmission that lets go - and thats in the heavier Exploder.

It is a 4 cylinder. I don't know what displacement. It had 7000 miles and the dealership has maintained it.

Unless its changed - the 2.3L - 4 cylinder engine has been around since the Pinto with differant heads & intakes every couple years. The turboed versions (early & mid 80s) in the Mustang & T-bird where competing with the 302 engine in terms of top end power, but they had a bad habit of blowing the head gasket and frying the clutch. In its current form it's a low powered economy engine but is pretty reliable. In the late 80s they had issues with being over revved but computer controls has elminated that for the most part. What exactly do you mean by "come apart"?

The only thing the service manager could say is that something internally came loose and wound up as metal shavings/fragments in the oilpan. The truck immediately shut off.
