When I go to Napa to buy a filter for something, they always have 2 selections availible, I'm always asked by the counter help if I want the better one (Napa Gold), or the cheap one. I got in a discussion about it at work, I had always bought the Napa Gold ones because I figgured a few bucks more was cheaper than an engine rebuild, but I was told that I'm throwing away money on the Napa Gold filters and the "cheap" filters are just as good and the only difference between the two is whats printed on the box. I know the Napa Gold filter box advertises better filtration, and I know that manufacturers tend to exagerate on how good their products really are, so, the question is, "am I really wasting my money on the more expensive Napa Gold filters?".
Thanks in advance

A good friend of ours went through the WIX plant a few years back. He told me one thing that I already knew, that WIX made the NAPA filters, but they make others also. I don't remember exactly which ones he said, I know one of them for sure was CAT, and I believe another was Baldwin and a few others also. Anyway he said as they went down the line and one "brand" ended, and another began, the filter simply changed colors. The guy giving him the tour said the fliter manufacturers had a deal worked out between themselves to keep them all profitable. Basically a mfg like WIX couldn't make filters on the Easty Coast and ship them West and compete with the makers on that coast, and the same went for the mfgs doing them on the West coast. So, filters made on the East coast for several different mfgs would came out of the WIX plant and be given different names, while those sold on the West coast would come out of say the Baldwin plant and be done the same way. I've never known the man that told me this to lie to me, in fact he's our "go to guy" when we can't find something so, for me anyway, I take what he told me about these filters as "gospel." Around here 90% of the customers we have run NAPA filters in their heavy equipment, and I have yet to see one of them have a lube related problem, other than one caused by simply not changing the oil.

Heres a copy of the oil study. I believe this person decided to check them out himself, not a lab but appears to be very in depth. On some of my vehicles by using recommended filters in this study Ive had as much as 5 lbs increase in oil pressure. I clicked on Napa and he said he didn't think there was a difference in filters except price.

Buy either bran you want we have bought both and the cheaper one seems to work just as good. The napa near us actualy tells us that it doesnt matter wich one you buy

It makes all the differance in the world if you plan on going 6-7000 miles between changes those cheap filters will collapse and then the oil will run thru bypass and it will not be filtered so if you plann on using cheap filters you get what you pay for.

The gold is better cut a cheap one open then a gold you will see the differance, just like comparing a walmart filter to a wix.

Actually the Walmart filter is designed and built by Champion Labs, same people who make them for STP and others. All tests I have seen indicate its a good middle of the road filter - perfectly adequate if you change your oil at 3K as you should. Fram filters - especially the base line product are notoriously bad.

Went to a seminar [beer hot dog party]once for truck batteries and oil filters. They are rated by what size particles they pick up out of the oil, measured in microns.I forgot a microns size, maybe .0004". But any way the best was a Hastings fiter. It employed a cotton like material, not paper and specs were better than all others by far. However Im sure the outfit throughing the party were Hastings distributors. They showed us all the filters cut open. They sold me on the Hastimgs filters.
