Hello,
I am looking at buying another truck from my friend. It's a 1989 Ford F150 Shortbox Reg Cab Lariat XLT
Rebuilt 302 EFI. Auto trans.
New front end, Newer paint, Newer Cragars & GoodYear tires. 165,000 miles

Don't know a whole lot about fords, What do you guys think of them? What are some problems to look out for? Does $2700 sound like too much?

Thanks,
Russ

Never buy a vehicle from a friend or relative unless you no longer wish to have them as a friend or relative.

I had an 89 F-150 lariat with 302 and 5 speed. Good truck. Replaced the clutch at 190,000 miles, rear brakes at 210,000 miles, replaced the starter at about the same time. New alt. at 150,000 miles. Traded her off for a '97 at 250,000 miles. Never had a wrench on the motor, and used no oil.
Front was starting to get pretty loose, tho.

Just picked up a new '05 F-150 with the 5.4 Triton.

hello
I'm not sure if the transmission has ever been rebuilt. It has no leaks, No rust. another thing I forgot to mention is it has new brakes as well. I am located in Saskatchewan, Canada, and the price I posted was in Canadian funds. The Engine was reuilt by my my friend (owner)himself, and I know he does good work. He paid 3300 for the truck 1 and a half years ago.
silimar trucks in the Auto trader are going from anywhere from 1500 to 4000.

Thanks,
Russ

Do you mean miles or kilometers then??? I'd think a '89 truck would be in Km

My grandparents have an '89 F350 XLT Lariat 4x4. Has 186000+ miles. 460, auto. We've had problems with the 460, usually a good motor, we have the exception. It's on I think the third one. Just had the tranny rebuilt. Great truck.
I have a 1995 F150 4x4 with a 302 and auto. 86,500 miles. Nothing wrong except the box is beginning to rust, and I think it should have dual exhaust.
Sounds like too much to me without seeing it. Probably a good truck, heck it's a Ford, it's a good truck :) The miles is what scares me, also should consider the investment in all the new/rebuilt stuff. May be a bargin that way.

If you look the value up on the NADA price guide it tells you the value would be between $750 and $3500 or so depending on condition, and whether you want trade in value and retail. I usually look it up thru Auto Trader .com but you should be able to go direct to Edmunds car value or NADA car pricing.

My Dad had a 89,same thing except 5 speed.the switch shorted out,but he got the battery disconnected and the little "fire" out before any damage occured other than a wiring harness.Had to put one starter,a clutch,a radiator and a few sets of brakes all the way around, and thats about it.When Dad dies it had 200000 plus miles on it and he hardly ever changed the oil and such on it.Dont know why Dad never did things like that, and got away with it.When I changed the oil in his M shrlt beofre he died,it was probably the first time it had been changed in 15 years!man was it black!

That series is ok. Rust? I've owned a bunch of them. Currently own a '90 F350 with 460 and almost a hundred thousand miles. No real problems that I can think of. The 302 won't have a lot of torque if you plan on pulling anything. If it has the AOD tranny, still running at that mileage look out. Condition is EVERYTHING. Although that is a few miles the truck could have many more good ones left. I have never had a problem with the ideal of paying a premium price for a premium vehicle. ray

The only thing I can add is that , in this neck of the woods, the short boxes are becoming collectable and as such are more valuable.

Russ, Don't know where you are but that truck around here would bring, maybe, $1200 to $1500 tops. Soon to be 16 years old, the trany would be the next to fail. For that kind of money you should get a '93 or '94 with a few less miles.*opinion*

I to think it is high priced. Who did the rebuild? When folks start listing the this has been done that has been done etc. I turn a deaf ear. All that stuff was done for the current owners benefit not yours. The truck is worth what the book says it is not a penny more. If the engine rebuild was done at home considerably less. Just my opinion.
Pitch who always buys used and have only been taken once.
