how do I tell if I have an A system or a B system generator. Its a 6 volt positive ground, generator and VR. I have heard that the procedures differ for polarizing, how long should should the brushes last?

What kind of tractor you working on?

The main difference is that one is probably a Delco Remy and the other a Ford system.

On the Delco, ground the field circuit; on the other, you feed the field circuit, which is grounded internally.

If the commutator is in good shape and as slow as these old things turn, brushes will last for many, many years.

If you are still thinking generator, grounding the field will take the regulator out of the circuit, not polarize it. Do you have a volt meter. Questions? find me on the Oliver page. I am looking because we are putting together a tech articel for the Oliver news letter on how to troubleshoot these problems. Merry Christmas.
