Just wondering what is the coldest anyone in their lifetime has seen on a thermometer. When and where? For me it was 31 degrees below zero back in my youth in southern Wisconsin. We got the spreader tractor started with my mother using the starter while I was turning the crank on the front.

When I was a kid I remember the day that our tennat in the other house had her stroke. The ambulance went by at 5:45 just as dad was going to the barn. When he came back in he commented that it was -43. The husband in the other house phoned to see if he could get a ride to the hospital. Dad plugged in the old 67 dodge while he had a coffee then started the car. It went but the car was never the same ofter that

Actual temp was -44 Yellowstone MT back in 1980. Waited till it warmed up to -20 to go sledding for the day. But have experienced many -35 to -40 mornings here in So MN.

Coldest wind chill was -92 during the 75 Superbowl blizzard in Fargo. Actually walked around town that night looking for some barely pop. Only way around town was afoot or X country skis. Most of the streets had from 2 - 4 foot drifts in them. Actually tripped over a car antenna on one street, only about 6" of it exposed.

Somewhere between 70-40 below zero. God only knows what the windchill was. Cruising the artic circle in the winter by ship doing survivability and combat studies for the Navy. A bit colder then I like.

Northern Maine.
I have a picture someplace of the thermometer at -43 F. As bad as that is, I think -20 and windy may be worse. I work for a railroad and I remember a couple nights the last couple years it was - 20 or -30 and windy enough that you had to lean into it. Factered to something like -70 wind chill. It's funny what the cold will do to stuff. When it's real cold, the rubber air hoses that we couple up between every car for the air brakes is like trying to bend a piece of 3/4" rebar.

Sometime in the late 60s in Northern Wis. the temp. at our place was -49° F and -54° in towm. I was driving a 62 Pontiac Tempest wagon. At the time we had no electricity at the time at that place and the car was about 1/4 mile from the house because of snow drifts. We loaded an old enamaled dishpan with charcoal got it going well and slid it under the crankcase. In an hour or two I was able to start the car. It was an invitation for disaster be we had to do it many times.

In the low 20s below zero on a couple of occasions in Nebraska. Once in the late 80s in western Nebraska and what must have been the winter of '95/'96 in eastern Nebraska.

-52 below at Clyde Park, Montana on the Sheilds river back in 1977. Had my feeding truck plugged in and it started OK but it would die when I let the clutch out. Had to slip the clutch to get the tranny and transfer case moving. No wind at all just a blue haze. Wife had a VW Bus and you had to put a blanket over your legs to keep warm.

I've seen -40 a few times. We had one particularly cold winter back in the 1940s when it would go down to -40 every night and the heat of the midday sun would bring it up to -20. Mercury isn't very accurate below -38 (C or F-it doesn't make much diff as the scales cross over at -40). The melting point of mercury is around -38 and it starts to congeal at -40.

Yeah, but you won't find mercury in most thermometers. The RED, BLUE, or GREEN liquid in them is alcohol. Much lower freezing point. 'Bout th only place you'll see mercury in thermometers is in lab thermometers. They have a SILVER column.

It was -44°C (-46°F) here just last night. Oh BTW, I do weather observation as part of my job, and the thermometer used to record the maximum temp for the day is still filled with mercury. They are way expensive and have to shipped as hazardous material. The minimum one is red alcohol. I've recorded -49°C. And stood on a forebay deck adjusting spillgates in a 100km (62mph) wind in that temperature, when each of 7 gates took 20 minutes to raise. The spray produced is like tiny needles at the best of times, but at that temp, it is truly enough to make one search for another job!

Never mind the actual reading, it"s the wind-chill that can really make the difference. A much higher temperature with a strong wind can be a lot more chilling than the lower temperatures. Either way you are welcome to these freezer temps or colder! In the UK we have a good climate - just lousy weather!

Back in January of 1969 when I was actually working...I was living about 12 blocks from my job, and every morning for 4-5 days at a time it was always -30 or more.
And every morning, my new Dodge Charger wouldn't start, and I would walk to work, and hope that by noon it had warmed up to -20, so I could walk back home and get my car. It didn't take too long before I wised up and I invested in a new "Auto-Start" system (Not a remote start, but rather you selected either interior or engine temperature, and it started the engine about once every hour). After that, I thought I was king of the hill with that device! Why would a person stay in SD? Must be lack of cranial cells from all that cold!

I've seen -24F two times here in central Ohio: once in January 1977 and the other in January 1984. The first time, I did a classic Jackie Gleason double-take when looking at the thermometer. I guess that temperature didn't quite register at first.

The coldest I've been was during the blizzard of 1978. It was -10 with a 30 knot wind. That was miserable.

I do not remember things like this very well so I looked it up just so I would be correct.
Our record all time low since record keeping started is +7.

Record high's and Low's

Must go out and finish in the yard. Is 62 now with a high of 70 today.
They are calling for 27 and rain/snow showers for Xmas day. Will need to get out my dictionary and look up this snow showers word to see what they mean.

Cold,

At 34 below zero (or colder), take a hot cup of coffee and toss the coffee up into the air. Nothing will touch the ground because it vaporizes before it can fall back to the surface.

Didn't believe it either, 'til I saw it. :>)

I hated North Dakota! ('Course, I don't think they were too fond of me either) :>(

I did that when it was the coldest I've ever seen it - around 25 below in western Nebraska in the late 80s. Even at that "warm" temp, very little of a cup of hot water makes it to the ground.

Here in northern NY, we'll get a couple of days of -40 every winter. About 15 years ago, our barn thermometer said -58 one nippy morning. From experience, I know that this particular thermometer is off about 5 degrees, so it was probably "only" about -53. During college, we walked about a mile and a half back from a bar one night when the thermometer on the bank read -47. NOT an experience I'd recommend, regardless of the amount of "anti-freeze" you've got on board! Seemed like a good idea at the time, though. It could be worse--rumor has it that at the research station in Anarctica, they have the "300 club". You go in the sauna, then have your picture taken standing by the South Pole marker. If the temperature difference isn't at least 300 degrees, you don't qualify....

Howdy,

It would have to be -25 back in January of 1994. It was just a few days after a snowstorm that had dumped around 17" on us here in West Union. If ya live in southern Ohio then that's a lot of snow and the kind of cold we see once in a blue moon. God bless.

I remember THAT storm REAL WELL! It left 22" on Louisville, Kentucky. The next day, we got down to -22. Coldest day in weather history here, and deepest snowfall too. It took a week before things even STARTED to return to normal.

I was in Minot North Dakotah while in the Army. Saw -45 one morning. To me, anything colder than -20, and it's almost a moot point. I can only freeze so solid....John

Here in western NY the coldest I ever remember seeing is -30 F in 1994. Schools were all closed, etc. The wind chill was not a factor. It was a stationary front...we had -30 or -25 weather for almost two weeks straight. WOOOOoooh that was chilly.
