The tractor that I might get to use for snow removel sits out side and I was wondering if I put a drop light under the hood on the Manifold side (turned on of course) would it help it start easier? The tractor is also covered with a tarp.
I know in the garage would be better but I have a F-20 torn apart and the car and truck in there.
Thanks Shaggy

I don't think there is or ever was a harder starting tractor built than the JD 730 Diesel.40 some years ago my tractor and combine was 10 miles from home,it was extremely cold and I still had beans to cut(had to wait until the ground froze up and no place to plug the engine heater in).I heated up new oil in quart cans(metal back then) at home.Went to the field and drained the cold oil.Put the warm oil in and she started right up like it was spring day.

Stop right there. Put that light down and your hands up..... please. As others have already stated. This is the time for a frost plug heater and a magnetic oil pan heater.

Your idea would work better if you use a clamp on type shop light with a heat lamp and point it toward the block. Thay way, all the heat generated will be directed at the block. The timer idea sounds good.

I forgot a few things. Its a 40 farmall B. Antd the tarp is not sealed tight its just covering the top of things. It wouldn't be on all night. Just a little while before I used it.
Thanks for your input.

...and get a properly rated timer, and set it to kick on 2-3 hours before you need to use the tractor.

Light under tarp on top of manifold. I am thinking of the potential for a vapor buildup and pending explosion. Probabilities are low but what is it parked next to? Just get a freeze plug heater....

I have in line in lower radiator hose heaters. Going to have to get mine pluged in. Keep it pluged in all the time when I might have to plow snow and forcast just in for 10-15" Unusually high

Lower hose heater is good on may tractors, but on a thermosyphon the flow restricition in hot weather might create a slight problem. I would reccomend one of the magnetic heater to attach to the oil pan.

I am an insurance agent here in Northern New York.
A couple of years ago one of insured's did just this. Tractor was parked next to the barn. Tractor caught on fire, then the barn!

Don't know what sort of tractor you have there but if you can access the battery easily, take it inside. It is amazing what % of cranking power is lost through just being cold.

Yea - but a 200 watt magnetic heater is pretty cheap & would work better, if this is a gas engine warming the oil will do you more good than warming the manifold....

And of course a frost plug heater is better than either & doesn't cost much more....
