I'm going to look at a MM G950 a friend has to sell. Belongs to his mother-in-law only driven to church on Sundays. Seriously, it has about 3000 hours on it and has always been taken good care of. Are there any perticular problems with the G950? Does anybody know much about this model? How does it compare to a JD 4020? Thanks

I have a G950 with around 3500 hrs. The MM had a great gas engine, however the Lanova diesel was just ok. The Lanova combustion system had lower peak cylinder pressures, which allowed MM and other manufacturer's which used the system, to more easily adapt a spark ignited engine. Regardless, engine life unfortunately was usually less than 4000 hrs because the top piston ring was too thin even at these lower pressures, and frequently broke by the fore mentioned 4,000 hrs. Also the aluminum pistons did not have an iron band for the top two piston rings (used by all major OEM's by that time), which allowed excessive top ring piston land wear. This allowed the rings to twist excessively accelerating ring fatigue. The top piston rings in my G950 were all broken in several places. Poor starting is the symptom. The tractor could only be started with great difficulty at temperatures around 40 degrees F. If the tractor you are considering will start unaided, at 40-45 degrees F without too much misfire and effort, it probably is ok. I bored the blocks .125 in and also bored out the energy cells so compression ratio did not get out of hand. It runs great at 504 cu in and 120 bhp.
Now additional comments. Tthe transmission shifting is stone age although the ampli-torque helps. It is not near as agile as either the IH or JD's of the day. It is difficult for me to understand why someone at that time would buy a G950 over a 4020 or 1206, unless they just so cheap, or the prospective buyer could not stand having another color. I like the old MM's so I bought one although there are better tractors. Also regardless of what you are told, they are not particularly fuel efficient. If you don't believe me look at the Nebraska Test results.

451 cid, 97hp. Compare it to an 856 for hp and since it weighs in at 10,500 lbs, it's the bulk of a 1206. The 4020 is a lot smaller and lighter!
