The pinion nut on the front differential just came loose for the second time. The dealer can't find his service manual. Please!!! Does anyone know the torque spec? It's the ZF front end.

Thanks

Hi Ron,

You're making this harder than it is.

If you aren't going to replace the crush sleeve, just take your impact wrench and carefully rattle 'er down until you get the 12 or so inch pounds of rolling drag at the pinion.

I have a service manual for an IH 684. It is supposed to be for a 584 also. I show a torque of 9 kgm (65lbft) for a pinion nut for a front drive axle. The manual says this is for a KIMCO front drive axle. Please take this information with a grain of salt as I am not a mechanic and maybe referring to an incorrect pinion. The service manual I have is quit complex. If you can give some more infor maybe I could be more help or even fax a couple of the pages to you. Hope this helps.

BW

Thanks for the information but unfortunately the old beast has the "ZF" front end. I think that the nut torques down on a crush sleeve to set the clearance in these?
Again thanks for your interest.

Ron

I just looked at my manual and it has the ZF all wheel drive axle info. There is a note to set a rolling torque of 1 to 2 Nm OR 9 TO 18 in. lbs for reinstalling the pinion. Sorry I didn't see this the first time. If you want I could scan some pages and e-mail or fax.

Dear BWKS,
I would love to see at least the applicable section dealing with this torquing procedure. I'm not a mechanic either but if I can just get the tightening right for clearance then the addition of Lok Tite may solve the problem.
I don't have a FAX but Ken, the other guy on topic, does. If you can find the time to send him a scan then I will really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Ron

I'm helping Ron out on this, I don't know if he has a fax but I do at work, 506-450-3731

This 584 has led a long life, the alternator took a long walk off a short pier last week too. More christmas work! I left a charger at the barn Ron and another old battery to boost it with. The negative terminal is almost off the charger so be careful if you try to use it!

Ken
