I just purchased a JD 730 Diesel from a local "old timer" that farms in our area. I got it for a song and a dance (less than 2500)and I am now addicted to the poppin sound but I"ve got a problem with it. I unfortunately didn"t notice how low on diesel I was until it was too late! I think I ran it out of fuel, and now it"s stuck under a pecan tree in a rye grass field and I can"t get it to start:(

If anyone in "JD land" could provide me with step by step instructions on how to prime it and fire her back up please please please HELP!!!!! !!!!!(I think my girlfriend is going to leave me if I make her push one more round bale out to our horses..... .) Thanks in advance.
Frustrated JD730

Sometimes it takes a long, long time to get all the air out of the fuel filters and fuel manifold. If you can tell which filter is first remove that plug first and then open the second after no more air comes out of the first filter.I can't remember, but I think it is the right(first stage) filter.Put the plugs back in and let it set for a while and try again. You are working with gravity on these tractor fuel systems.
Next, remove the return fuel line on the injection pump cover. The line is located on the left side of the engine and a few inches in front of the starter or pony motor.I think it takes an 11/16" wrench or maybe a 5/8" wrench,I can't remember.Just take it loose there and push it over to the side. There were two different setups coming up out of the cover. The first was a simple(small) open fitting and the second(about golf ball size) which was an optional upgrade that came later after the tractor was built. It contained a spring and a ball which caued the transfer pump to build about 10# of pressure(Suppose to have given the tractor a bit more power and it did).If your tractor has the larger(upgrade) fitting,It takes a much larger wrench to remove the top of the fitting.Maybe a 1 1/16" wrench.
In either case remove what you have and let the fuel flow until you don't see any more air bubbles.Remember it may take several tries before you get all the air out of the system.Usually owners of 730 Diesels only let them run out of fuel once.LOL.----The 70s and early 720s didn't have this return line. They just had a plug in the fuel manifold as I recall.---Good luck, bob

Electric start or cranking engine? If not run completely dry, they start after a 1/2 a minute rotating without compression to prime the primary fuel system. The cranking engine of course has much more endurance than the electric start. How to handle this and other service questions is all in your service manual. Since you got such a bargain on this machine you should be able to afford the parts, service and operator's manuals cheap directly from Mother Deere at 1-800-522-7448.

Fill up with fuel, open up the 2 bleed screws (3/8" bolts with alum. washers on the heads)on the back side of the fuel filter housing which is in the center of the frame under the fan support. Fuel should free flow out, close screws,on a 730 you should have one more of those bleed screws on the left hand side of the engine block on a housing bolted to the side of it.I had a 720 that had this screw but never could get fuel out of it ? so if you don't get any it may not be the end of the world. Try to start it now,if all else fails you are going to have to pull off the valve cover to loosen the injector lines while you crank it over.

Do exactly what Mike says. I did a not to smart thing last summer. I noticed before hooking up my haybine the night before I was going to mow hay that the fuel sediment bowl on my JD 70 diesel that was seeping diesel. Didn't have a new gasket handy so I shut it off to fix later. The next morning checked everything out and fired her up and down the road I went. They can go a long ways on just a little fuel. I got at least two miles down road when I heard a miss. Thought that is strange when it dawned on me. To late I ran her dry. I had enough tools to bleed the filters but didn't know about the plug on the side of the motor. It wouldn't start. I pulled it off the road with the pony motor. Thank goodness for the pony motor. I had a nice walk home to get the truck and owners manual. It shows you real well how to do it. Fired right up once I bled the one on the side of the engine. Lesson learned. It died it the right place. I had just crossed a busy railroad and highway. That would have been a bit stressfull. Good Luck. John

fill the fuel filter, then crack the injector line on the injector farthest from the inj pump and crank till she starts then snug up the line.
