Never experienced this myself but what exactly happens inside a diesel engine (or it's fuel system) when gasoline is mistakenly used instead of diesel oil? I've been told it can be a very costly mistake on say today's diesel pickup trucks, etc.

The fuel knock will destory the engine long before the pump is damaged.

My experience. It was late at night in a small town. I used the green nozzle in a dark station. MISTAKE! I had put 10 gallons of unleaded in my 34 gallon diesel tank before I realized it. I changed to the diesel nozzle and continued to fill the tank with diesel. I then drove 40 miles at slow freeway speed to the next town. I then put two quarts of motor oil into the fuel tank and topped it off with diesel. I continued to do the short-drive and fuel-it trick until I got to my destination approximately 400 miles. I have sense driven several hundred miles (on diesel) with no noticeable engine problems. This was a Cummins Diesel in a Dodge Ram Pickup. I keep my fingers crossed every time I drive it hoping that I haven’t damaged the injector pump.

As previously stated. If not run long and hard at full rpm/power in hot weather. And if it's a 1/3 of a tank or more of diesel topped up with gasoline. Nothing is going to happen except the "winner" who filled it with gasoline should be sore in the seat of the pants. Other wise a higher percent gasoline mix driven hard in an injection system built for high sulphur fuel is going to cost $$$.

Both Volkswagen and Mercedes advise the addition of gasoline to the Diesel fuel in cold weather to prevent gelling. As best I remember, it was up to 25%. Lubing the injector pump is critical. I have not tried it, but in an emergency a gasoline-oil mix suitable for 2-cycle engines might be used in a Diesel. As far as gasoline causing damage to the engine cylinders, I simply do not believe it. Combustion starts when the fuel is injected near TDC. Diesel fuel will "knock" more than gasoline.

Some folks use 10% gas or so as an anti gel in cold weather. A couple engines allowed this, today's likely don't in the manual anyhow, closer tolerances, etc.

What the others say, the pump will fail & it will run real poor or way too hot if it has too much gas in the mix. Won't hurt if it's a small % and is not run very hard or hot.

I wouln't get excited about a gallon in the tank, or filling the tank by accident & draining it before running more than a minute or two.

Be big trouble if it was run for a long time on 80% gasoline....

Agreeing with RN on the diesel components--very close tolerances, high pressures and lack of lubrication from the gas, which is a "dry" fuel compared to diesel. Injection pump will be destroyed, injectors will be scored and the longer the engine is run, internal engine parts will be fried from pre-ignition. My guess on the JD tractor that survived the mistake is that the engine was not run long enough on pure gas, but instead a gas/diesel mix was flowing when the engine was shut down.

neighbors have a JD model 850 ran gas in it. Dad went down and drained it refilled with diesel and bleed it out.Started right up and still runs to this day, some people are just lucky !

A couple years ago,I was in a convenience store, some lady pulled up,she was in a panic, she had just filled her hubbies brand new dodge diesel full of unleaded..this thing was blowing white smoke like you wouldn't believe..she was asking what to do..we told first to SHUT IT OFF.. I could see running it causing detonation problems (broke pistons,etc..)from the much higher octane, also might overheat the injector pump..just my opinion..

some diesel pumps partial use the fuel as a lubricant in say plunger/pressure piston area, gasoline doesn't lubricate -pump has extreme high wear, short life. GM on cars 80s 350 this problem. Early JD Bosch pattern didn't have problem because used engine oil at back of piston to lubricate- gas mix was relatively harmless. Other problem is straight gasoline not just winter mix of say 20%- burn rate in cylinder is quicker than diesel - flash at close to TDC causes lot of heat. Example I know of was Puegot 504 diesel delivered to Glenview imports. Car was offloaded at Kenosha with 3 gas models, all 4 were filled with Gas and driven to Glenview- about 90 miles. Diesel engine siezed at end of run- top of pistons cratered/melted, cylinder walls scored badly, rings welded into piston grooves, head also pitted/craterd, valves/ valve guides scored. Used as object lesson- when picking up vehicles, read paperwork, take fuel tank decals from delivery pack and fit around filler neck/top of tank cap- English label will say 'Diesel fuel' or 'unleaded gasoline' - fill with appropriate fuel before delivery to dealer or put on trailer to deliver.
