Many years ago, i rented a garage to work on a car that i was getting ready for next summers racing! As there wasn"t any heat, a friend suggested getting an old pot-bellied stove, and using "drain oil" in it. the method of using oil was this. I hung a 5 gallon can on the wall, with a copper tubing down into the burning chamber. I installed a pet-cock in the line to control the flow, which only had to be a "drip-drip-drip" after the stove got hot! The oil dropped into a cast iron skillet placed on the burner. A rolled up ball of news paper got things going! The flue went out thru the window. (I replaced the glass with a piece of tin!) This worked great until-- One evening, while working on the engine of the car, and with my backside near the stove, i started feeling very hot in my nether regions! Looking around, i saw the entire outside of that stove ON FIRE!! I pulled out the tubing, and the fire subsided, but that method of heating got old fast! We decided to wait for warmer weather to work in there! So, watch out, don"t burn down the house, barn, garage, what ever! Keep warm! And i now use a torpedo heater to work on my tractors and mowers, in winter! by: Rustyj

Not saying it's legal, but a friend puts about a half gallon bucket in the corner of his outdoor wood boiler when he fills and next fill it's gone. Guys used to pipe the oil in their wood stoves in the garage with a copper tube and a needle valve and just drip it on the wood after it's burning. Don't take much of a drip. Also a guy used to drip it on some bricks in the corner of the woodstove and adjust it so it would keep burning. Makes smoke though and a forced draft may help this. Bill

Mother Earth used to have directions on how to build a waste oil heater out of an old waterheater tank with doors cut in and dripping in sand. Bill

Have local shops near me that use them and have all said same thing. Alot of maintenance and your really need to keep it filtered. The biggest trouble is when people start bring you used oil. What is exactly in that bucket or barrel. Oil/antifreeze,gearlube etc. You do not want gearlube in the mix. I use radiant in my shop and really like them. No air blowing just heat period. The last unit another shop put in this season that I also help out was over 4500.00 and they are still having trouble keeping it going. The one mechanic spends more time on it than wrenching equipment. Good Luck And Happy Holidays.

Here in western mass a lot of people are going to waste oil burners. Most part stores take used oil ,a few of the guys are getting it there. When i change oil in the trucks, i save it for a fellow . It doesn"t take long to get a drum full. You should check on trucking companies,if they don"t burn it they need to get rid of it some way. glenn

I have a Clean burn I wouldn't trade it for anything. 500 gal won't last very long at all You need a good place to get 5 times that much if your going to heat much area. I keep my 40 x 54 shop 70 24 hours a day and use over 2500 gal a year. For several years I would have said only buy a Clean burn but now I am hearing several co's make good ones

I heat my 40x70 shop now with about 600 gallons of diesel per year, but I only heat it when I'm
working,probably 8 or 9 hours a day.A local
car repair shop said they use 700 gallon per year of used oil,the local JD dealer told me they use around a 1000 gallon per year in there waste oil heater.I had a 75000 btu waste oil burner several years ago that took about 5 gallon per day,but it took about an hour a day to service it.

You will use about as much waste oil as you would use heating (diesel) fuel to heat the same space. roughly.

Around here you can give the oil to those that have a waste oil heater - NH dealer & neighborhood tractor repair place take it.

Just dig a hole and dump the oil in,and in a day it will be gone. OK tree huggers I am just kidding. I think burning used oil is a great idea. Don't need a shop heater that much in Calif. Around 80 today. I had all the snow to last me a life time while I was in the Navy. I put my oil in 5 gal pales, and take it to recycle places that will take used oil. I used to put used oil in drums but, whenit cost 75.00 to haul away 150 gal's that was enough for me. Better be careful some states don't allow that much used oil to be stored. Stan
