Dual Wheels on a backhoe

I recently bought a John Deere 2WD 410 Diesel Backhoe. While the pins are a little loose at $9000.00 Cdn. including 500 miles of freight it was in my price range and runs and works well. The problem is at around 18,000 lbs. it sometimes has to go where a tracked machine would be better. Having to claw my way out with the hoe a few times I thought there must be a better solution. After running it by a few oldtimers I decided to put dual wheels on the rear. I had some spacers spun and installed some slightly smaller tires and rims running about 6 p.s.i. air just to to kick in when the machine is on soft ground. As there is no holes or eyebolts on the JD rims I drilled holes and installed eyebolts, connecting the outside rims with J bolts thru pipe welded onto the outside rims. I wouldn't recommend clamps as they are just not as positive as pipe welded onto the rims and locking tabs. The bottom line is the difference is like night and day as the displacement is nearly doubled. Any comments or ideas for wider tires or rims for the front would be appreciated.

I've been thinking about doing the same thing to my Ford 7500 backhoe which is about the same size machine. Glad to see someone else has already tested the idea. I was wondering if you have had a chance to get some pictures.

This sounds interesting. Can you please post a picture of your J bolt hookup?

I can"t post a picture right now as the machine is 140 miles away under 3 feet of snow. Setup is like this: There are 4 cast spokes in the JD rim. Drill a hole for an eyebolt in the center of the spokes as close to the outside of the rim as possible but leaving enough room for the J-hooks to hook onto eyebolts. Weld 4 pieces of pipe about 6" long evenly spaced on the inside of the outside rim which is now just a rim after torching out the inside where the hub used to attach. The important thing is to weld locking tabs out of flat stock onto both rims and spacers so nothing can move under load. You might want to armour the valve stems by welding a piece of pipe around them for added protection at this time. Place spacer into inside rim - should be a snug fit - a good machine or tire shop can spin these spacers easily. I used 1/4" for added strength. Insert J-bolts into outside rim and attach outside rim to spacer hooking J-bolts in at the same time and tighten nuts in J-bolts. All up cost around $300.00 with used tires and rims. I used 3/4" eye bolts and J-hooks. You could also use just straight bolts or ready rod instead of eyebolts and J-hooks, it just makes it a little more work to take off the outside tires and spacers. I hope this helps.

What you can do is make "band-type" duals for front end. I have seen that done on grain combines when it gets wet so the back end doesn't sink in mud. Seemed to work good.
