do you have to repolerize the VR every time you you disconnect the battery

Polarizing is only necessary after a LONG period of non-use, disassembly of the generator, or if the battery was previously connected wrong, and is now connected correctly.

Procedures differ depending upon whether the generator is considered an "A" system or a "B" system, and alternators are NEVER to be polarized.

P.S....

Even though you may be jumpering connections at the VR when polarizing, what you are really doing is restoring the residual magnetism in the polepieces of the generator, so it will begin charging at startup, with the correct polarity to match the battery.
