improvise tractor chains with cable??

I've heard of people winding cable around their tractor tires to use as chains, but never talked with anyone who has tried it.
I have a set of chains for my backhoe, but have a clearance problem and they rub hard on the ROPS cage. I thought the cable trick would clear and still give me enough traction for snow plowing.
If anyone has tried this stunt, I'd like to hear how it worked out.
Thanks,
Smiley

Thanks for the thoughts fellas. I think I'll try to find a set of spacers but if we get a lot of snow before then, I may try the cable (I've got a whole roll out back). One of the tires is so-so and the other about scrap, so tire wear wouldn't be a concern. They would only be used a couple hours at a time if we have to much snow for the jeep to handle. As for slpping around the rim, I would bolt the clamp to the rim to keep it in place, just like when I had the chains on. Seeing as how we haven't had any replies from someone who's tried it, it's beginning to sound more interesting, just as an experiment to see what it does.

Hi Smiley, I don't think the cable idea will work out good. They are good for pulling strength, but I don't think they will do very good if being in contact with the ground. The wear factor will be great, not to mention what they will do to your tires.. Don

I think there are spacers available to set the tires out one or two inches in order to give the needed clearance.

What will you do when the cable starts to wear and the shrap shards get in the tires.
Lots of slow leaks maybe.

I've never tried it. But I've got to wonder what's going to stop the cable from walking or slipping around the rim, getting out of shape between the lugs, or even binding into the tires at times. Chains can tear up tires pretty good as it is, and are pretty stable if fastened right. Gotta wonder how stable cable would be.

I guess you have to do what you have to do in a pinch. Then again, someone who's tried and done it might say that it works great, and that I'm clueless.

I'd hate to see you work at winding them up, and have it not go so well, or as planned, or still not have enough clearance. Smaller tires with chains? Good luck.
