I would not bacause a 3208 won't stand much lugging at all, always replacing them in 10 wheelers that done a lot of off roading.

Leland,

The original engine in that tractor WAS a Cat V-8, can't remember the model, but basically the forerunner of the 3208.

Basically, what Doug is asking is if he can replace the early series CAT V-8 he already has with the later series 3208.

Our MF 1800 has the Cat 3116 I do believe. One Oliver 2255 we had had the 3150 and the other the 3208. I don't see a problem swapping but I do know that the Topkick we have now with the 3208 runs out of breath at about 2500 while the 3116 in the MF will stretch her legs out at 3200. And that is crazy talk about them not being able to handle being lugged! The only other problem may be if the 3208 going in is turboed. Our 1800 is set at 180 horse which is what a non-turbo 3208 is usually at but will hit 250 with the turbo. I am sure the tractor could handle it though, they are simple but ROCK solid old beasts.

I grew up a block from a massey dealer and I used to spend quite a bit of time there, and massey used this motor in there smaller 4WDs and the wrench spinners had a pile of them out back that they had replaced and they said that those small cat V-8s were the biggest piece of crap ever built . And later I found this out for myself driving 10 wheelers they would not stay running long they replaced several of these motors yearly, bacause you had to keep them wound up tight to get any useable power out them. And this is not crazy talk I am just telling what I know about them from use and quotes of others.

I do agree about them having to be tached up to produce the most power. Makes no sense to put them in a truck where you need lots of low end power to get motivated. But all the V-8 Cats we have and do have have never been touched in any which way and they all have at least 4000 hrs. With the exception of the first one in our TR95 that the previous owner neglected to check the oil and she spit a rod out of the block and one injection pump having a leaky seal in it. Of course 4000 hrs is hardly anything these days. We all have our own opinion! Not meaning to ruffle your feathers!

No offence taken but when I was a kid those massey mechs would cuss at any tractor with a cat engine that went thru there shop they replaced a lot of them with real low hours ,either they where junk or the farmers did not use them properly.

Doug, the governer will need to be set up to the power your tractor needs and can handle. You will have to find this out from Massie unless you have the spec's from the old engine. Full load speed and torque @ Full load. If your engine is set up too high it can rip the tractor apart.

Doug, I can"t see a problem, as Massey installed 3208"s in many of their tractors. We have a 1500 articulate Massey, and a White 4-180 both with 3208"s and they both make a great package.

I am certainly not an expert but isn't the 3208 the engine that was factory installed on the V-8 Masseys, Olivers, and Whites?

That is the engine in my Water Tender and sure is a big heavy block to install in a tractor. Add to this picture the manifolds, air cleaner, fuel filters, generator, radiator ect and it will take up a lot of room. Mark H.

Mark: They are talking the big articulateds for this engine. 3208 is the baby in those big ones today. MF 1500 and 1800 series are now close to 25 years old and 3208 was the standard engine. New articulated tractors coming off the assembly line today have close to twice the displacment and power.

Hugh, if they where original equipment in that tractor it will be easy to get the right power and speed settings. You don't want to just drop in another engine as it is or that could be the start of a big expensive adventure. Later Bob

Bob: I don't know a whole lot about these MF 1500 and 1800 series tractors. I did have a s/a highway tractor with 40 drop deck trailer in the late 70s and 80s. I moved a lot of farm tractors for both MF and IH. I can remember about a half dozen different MF 1500 and 1800 and they all had 3208 Cat engines. You know and I know that Cat is a kitten compared to the engines going in articulated tractors today. That was my point, nothing slse.
