I am haveing problems starting this H when I bought it the man said they converted it to 12 volt then could not get it started. the engine looked to be in good shape.I have converted it back to 6 volt I rebuilt the carb but it floods very easy. I have good spark an I am pretty sure its timed close. when I go to start it it will only run as long as I keep the starter switch engaged. any suggestions would help thanks glenn

Glenn You said it will run if you keep the starter switch engaged right? and the tractor has not run since being rewired? Take a close look at the back of the starter switch, check that the smaller wire that leads to the amp meter box is connected to the battery side of the starter switch not the starter side. What is happening is as soon as you let go of the starter switch the power to the coil is getting shut off just like hitting the ignition switch to stop the motor

Sounds like fuel is not a real issue for your starting problem.

Electrical. With the back & forth 6-12-6 v, something isn't right. I'd check for the resistor also, did you leave that in? Or perhaps it is built into the coil if that is new. It cuts the points voltage in half, which you need for 12v, but now your 6v would be putting out 3v.....

If it was converted to 12volt. The previous owner may have installed a resitor in line to the ignition to cut the voltage down from 12volt to 6 volt after it runs a bit. Look for a white bakelite resitor in the circuit, that is a common problem with them when they go bad.

Do you have the mag or the distributor later conversion? If mag electrical system will have nothing to do with starting, if distributor you may not have it wired corectly. Mag will have just one wire from it to switch and switch grounds when pushed in to kill the tractor, distributor switch will have 2 wires and does NOT ground.

Yes they all flood very easy but sounds like you have a elec. problem.Try turning on the switch and check points for spark. sounds like they are only getting power when the starter is pushed.Maybe in the rewiring process something got messed up.

Stick,

I have no idea what is wrong with your tractor, however, here is the best procedure to start the thing if it is in good shape mechanically.

They all 'flood' very easily. H's just do not like the choke.

Crack the throttle 2/3 to 3/4 open before you try to start the tractor. Pull the ignition switch (if equipped) and hit the starter switch.

Don't even use the choke at all until after the engine starts, then when the tractor tries to die, catch it with the choke and just "feather" the fuel until the engine smooths out.

You might want to check your points; .013" for the mag and .019" for the distributor types.

Hope ya get 'er,

Allan
