I am replacing a clutch in a 7740 Ford and was wondering if there was anything unique to pay attention to that might need replacing. (I guess it has a hydraulic actuator for the throwout there is also a cable connected to the clutch pedal that actuates something, what is that all about?? Thanks for the help, by the way the clutch is slipping real bad, could something of malfunctioned other than the usual clutch problems, Thanks

Most 40 and 70 series tractors I have worked on have leaked motor oil from between the rear main seal carrier and oilpan. There is an updated carrier that can be installed. Usual sign is a shattered pan gasket from too little clamp load between pan and seal carrier.

Hi Kraig,

I assume that this tractor is a 12x12. That cable is an interlock for the shuttle lever, so that the clutch must be disengaged before you can shift into gear. Just do the normal inspections of everything, springs, levers, etc. If it's gone bad since a while, you will likely need a new pressure plate, and the flywheel will have to be cut. If the engine has a leaky rear seal, change that now, renew the pilot and release bearings, and you should be good to go. The only other problem that I am aware of is with the slave cylinder. There is the occasional one that leaked and needed to be replaced. That is obvious as the clutch won't disengage. Not the problem here. The biggest cause of clutch failure is the boot that's glued to the pedal all day. Under normal service and shifting (no loader) that clutch should last 10000 hours. Even a loader tractor should get 5000 hours. HTH.
