OT - Bad Battery?

My 94 K Blazer didn't want to start today. I jumped it and it started right up. I noticed then that the alternator was only pushing about 12-13 volts according to the dash gage. I looked at the battery and it was several years old. I replaced it. Now the gage shows 14 volts - straight up like it did before. Could this be caused by the battery being old - acting as a drain? Or should I look for another cause? Is the new battery just masking a problem that will reappear? Thanx, Irv

I always replace them every 3-4 years that way I don't get a phone call from wife when I am 45 miles away and her car won't start, worth it for me just so I don't have to worry.

You didn"t say how old the battery was but it seems that your charging system is working well as you see the difference on voltage output. I live in the great white north in Michigan and it seems that you made the right choice. When I was younger I never understood why my father was such an advocate for new batteries when a problem cropped up. Now I am pretty much the same way and my kids are rolling their eyes when I start talking about replacing batteries at some frequency. Factory guys I have heard have suggested every 4 years but I start getting uneasy around 6.

Irv: The others have said it all, you made the right move. Now place the old battery in a warm spot. To satisfy your self, put it in a tractor sometime. They don't tend to be so far away that a jump start is costly. I do this with batteries that I question whether life is gone.

Supporting other comments and my experiences.

1. First sign of battery trouble, get another period.

2. Winter onset brings out the bad characters in your battery so expect to have a marginal battery show it's colors then.

My experience: Seem to notice a difference in the "way batteries fail" in cars and trucks. Until about 20-25 years ago, you might be aware of a slow decline in performance.....might drag or grunt or you might have to turn the key on and off a few times, but it still might start the vehicle for several weeks/months. The last few I've replaced, didn't even know I was having a problem until one morning when they were completely dead and had worked fine the day before. I attribute it to the way they're used; even with the key off, there's still a constant power drain.

Don't know what it is. I figure once a battery passes the 3 yr mark, it will fail regardless of how long it's supposed to last.

But I am delightfully surprised (knock on wood) the Mopar OEM in my 98 Dodge truck is still a purrin.

Wonder if the 140 amp alternator has anything to do with it?

Could be either, or both. Battery was old anyway, you did the most common thing for the most common cause, replaced what appears to be a weak or dying battery. May not have another problem.

Sounded like you had a dead cell in the Battry. Good choice with winter coming on! Lot cheaper than a towing bill or being stranded. Could have been dirty battry terminals but now you have it corrected. Mark H.

Very good chance that the battery is going south on you.
