Which small farm tractor with loader to buy?

We"re soon to be farming 5 acres and want a small tractor with loader, for turning compost, lifting bales, turning soil, turning in cover crops, mowing hay, and cultivating. Soil is sandy loam with clay subsoil, and sometimes is very wet (like right now.) I suppose a 35 HP Kubota might be ideal, but I like the antique thing. Any help would be much appreciated. Being new at this, we"re willing to consider all options. Thanks very much,
Bill

You could look for a medium sized loader tractor and then depending on what you're planning to cultivate and what you mean by "cultivate", look for a small or medium cultivation tractor. A Farmall Super C with a cultivator would be just the ticket if you're talking row crop cultivation, like corn. The problems with older loader tractors will be such things as trip buckets, no hydraulic down force, maybe non-live hydraulics, (they really need a front mounted pump), etc. By having two tractors you'll be able to pull yourself out when you get stuck in those some-time wet conditions. Notice I said "when", not "if".

Yes, that seems like a good idea -- a Super A or C, offset for cultivating, and with all the necessary attachments. And also something bigger like one of the larger types that RN and Paul mentioned. Lots of farmer/mechanics around here who'll be glad for the work I give them, too (hope not that much!) Tractors are a mixed bag around here as far as I can tell; people use whatever they can get their hands on. Anything but a JD, is what I've heard so far. As for the mud, it has been nasty, warm and wet, but we're getting our first hard freeze tonight, so thank God for small favors, I guess. That sounds great. . .thanks, Bill. We'll look into purchasing 2X the fun. Regards,
Bill

You will need to compromise between the loader & the cultivating, depending which is more important....

What size bales will you be lifting, and how high? Small round, large square, etc.? I have 5x6 large round that needs a lot of tractor to lift just with the 3pt, needs _much_ tractor to lift with a loader.

In addtion to those mentioned, a Ford 660 or 860 (also 661 / 861 - same thing, couple years newer) or the Ford 1000 line of tractors can do the job, and are well supported yet. Not all 800 Fords are the same, the middle number lets you know what features it has, and the x6x is often considered the best setup with 5-speed, live pto.

If you want to do heavy cutting, like with a brush hog, you will prefer live pto.

If you are baling hay or blowing snow, you will really, really want live pto.

You want power steering for a loader tractor. Yes, you can get by without, but why?

What dealers are left near you, what color of tractor was popular around you? I would condiser parts & experience nearby in my consideration as well....

Thanks for the suggestions, gents, especially since the question is so broad. We"re market-farming, and really need the cultivation more than the loader, which would just be for hauling small bales and compost (a LOT of compost) around. It"s also a fairly tight area, with hedgerows and a few small buildings (sheds and a high tunnel or two.) Can"t decide between a Super A and an AC B and a small Ford at the moment. Really appreciate the help, though. And now I see a Kubota L 305DT for a good price, with loader.

What size bales? Front or rear bale load? How heavy load on loader? What type or size cultivator? What size plow? What type mower? All factors to consider as well as what you could afford. I see nothing to use to give advice with what will do a job that we don't know actually what you want to do.

IHC 300U, Massey-Ferguson 135, 165, John-Deere 950. This is price from low to high: $2000.00--$8000.00 loader type. Cultivating? IHC H, A, C, or numbers 100,130,140,200,300,350. AC wd,wd45, d15, d17 might also be in area. What kind of dealer is closest to you? Loader work tractor and cultivating tractor slightly different requirments. Low to ground, wide front, extra tail weight for loader, high clearance narrow front or offset like IHC A better for cultivating- especially with front mount cultivator. RN
