Our electric company (NYSEG) wants us to choose between a locked in fixed rate and a variable rate. It is for one year. I'm leaning towards fixed rate. Any other people out there have to make this choice on their electric bill? I'd like to here opinions. And why you chose the option you did. Thanks in advance.

Problem with my REA Coop is the higher rate is during the summer when your are runnin yer AC.

But what's to say that they don't just juggle the numbers on a fixed rate to make the same bottom line at the end of the year.

Folks gotta make a livin at what they do or they go under. Want your power co to go under? No of course not. And they don't either. So they will set the rate so that they can survive.

Haven't seen any Cadillac's in the Co-op Director's parking spot lately..... ..... ....

Did your rate take a big jump in the last year? Did they jump it to match someone's idea that oil would hit $70? If not, I'd go for the fixed rate.

I have NYSEG also and I don't recall seeing anything giving me a choice. The bill I'm looking at now is from 10/15 thru 11/17 at a fixed rate of 10.5567 perkwh with a monthly service charge of $12.12. What are they offering for the variable?

Yikes!! That's expensive! Looking at my current rate here in Eastern Canada, we have 7.90 cents/kWh for the first 1300 kilowatt-hours, then 6.25 cents/kWh for anything above the 1300. We have a monthly service charge of 16.72 plus the 15% HST tax added on everthing at the end.

Hi Pitch , This package is not with your billing. The notice I have in front of me says that you can learn more about your choices at nyseg.com or by calling 1-866-697-3403 NYSEG must receive your choice by 7:00 PM on December 30th. If not , they make the choice for you. I'm favoring the locked in rate. Prices don't normaly go down. Especialy in todays world.

I don't know how your rates compare to ours here in PA, but our utility (PP&L), has applied for a rate increase starting in January.

I just don't see how it will get cheaper in the future, so I'd lean toward locking in, unless your situation is different from ours.

Neither way would appeal to me. If you go fixed rate and costs go up they will make up for it somehow.

What I cant figger out is I get a cheaper rate for my water heater(separate meter) then I do for lights and plugs. Yet the electricity comes from the same generator and on the same wires. Now how can they do that.

If you look at the meter for your water heater you will probably find that it has a timer and switch on it. It shuts down during peak load hours, and helps to even out the load on the company's whole system. That way they don't have to keep extra generating capacity ready to heat your water at the same time everyone is cooking supper, running the dishwasher, turning on every light in the house, etc. This is worth something to the company, probably more than the discount that you get.

Harold

The waterheater meter does not have a timer or switch on it. The last house we lived in was all electric and we got a lower rate for that. Here we have a natural gas furnace but an electric cook stove and clothes dryer.
