OT--Trailer Registration fee question..

Hey folks, wonder if anyone knows the answer to this question? In your state or neighboring states, do they offer any kind of lifetime registration fee for a small utility trailer?
Maine used to offer this, and does offer very low (compared to NY) registration fees still, but no longer offers the one time registration fee. Most states will allow you to register a trailer in their state even if you live out of state...they are happy to have the $. In Wisconsin NO registration is necessary for a homemade trailer under 3000 gvwr.

Thanks in advance..

I have a home made utility trailer. Had to have it inspected by the state police get a tag and inspection sticker. They told me something like $10-$15 per year or $90 life time for the tag. I got the life time. That has been 10 or so years ago.
Our state requires tags and inspection sticker on all trailers; even small boat trailers.
Not so bad I guess because my property tax is -00-

Want to know about registering your vehicles in another state; just look up and read all the flack about large trucks that registered in OKLA. and now have to go back to there own state and try and get a tag from them now.

Maryland requires tags, which an annual fee on little utility trailers.

Only tow dollies are exempt (tags not required). Though if you pull an untagged car, the dolly is required to be tagged. Either the car on it, or the dolly itself, has to have a tag. Law normally not enforced.

CA has just gone to PTI, permanent tags. $25, for either my 3000GVW or 10000GVW. That was belive it or not a reduction. The 10 wasn't registered until the new tag but the 300 used to be $35 a year.

Same in TN; just have enough tag on your truck to handle the weight of truck and trailer combined. Not sure about Bguy below; maybe it's optional or maybe he's hauling commercially..... ..

Trailer tags are cheap in SC.$10.00, I think. They are going to the permanent ones on larger trailers, not sure if they do it on small ones. I do not run a tag on my 12K gooseneck. As a rule, they do not bother you In-State. I may get a big surprise one day, though....

In Sc you dont have to register a trailer with a capacity of 25000 or less. Some do,some dont.I didnt.if you deide to go ahead and register it,itd like 90 bucks lifetime of the trailer, even if you sell it,just transfer the tag to the new owner.Around here, only the bigtime haulers register theirs.

John, not sure what part of SC you are in...I am near the NC line, & have heard they will get you there with no trailer tag.... Not sure if it is true.

Davis,I live about 12 miles from the Marquette plant you got some equipment from.On the tags, when you buy a trailer from a dealer, they should give you a form to take to the hwy dept.It says on there that if the capacity of the trailer is more than 25000 it must be registerd.I verified this with the hwy dept.A permanent tag is 90 bucks for this application or 25000 or less and never has to be changed. Now,the reason the offer this tag is specifically what you said,in some states they will get you for not having a tag on it,but they have yet to bother me in the three years I took a tractor to a show in Charlotte.Of course all of this was three years ago,so the law may have changed now.Privatly sold trailers are the same except you wont get that paper like from the dealer and you have to fill all of it out at the Hwy dept.

I suppose another state might be glad to sell you a plate but I doubt the state you live in would enjoy it much. And any Patrol seeing you would wonder if you were pulling a stolen trailer. I think you better just cough up the dough bud, or else move to Nebraska. my trailer plates are very inexpensive, but then we pay property tax on our pickup trucks, gets kinda pricy if you drive a newer one.

Howard,

That's exactly what I first thought but I got the idea from my father in law who is a NYS trooper and he advised me that it is perfectly legal and as long as I keep the paperwork with the tow vehicle there is NO issue. Don't lie on the out of state registration application and you are good to go. My particular trailer is serial-numbered from the factory (Worthington). It is a snowmobile trailer but I use it for hauling wood, mulch, furniture too. I wouldn't be considering it if there was any legal issues--in my line of work I have to keep my nose squeeky clean (insurance agent).

I feel your pain (NY, too). My 7k# trailer costs over double per year what my truck does to register. Inspection is more, too if that makes any sense.

Michigan just went to a permanent trailer registration. Price varies with weight of trailer. Example, my 5x7 utility trailer used to cost $16 per year - cost $75 this year! The $75 is a minimum fee, and depending on the weight of trailer, goes up from there. Wife's 2000+ lb. crank up camper also was $75. Nasty is that if I sell the trailer, the plate is null and void, and If I replace the trailer with a new one, it's a new plate and another $75. If I trade cars, I can transfer the plate for a small fee. OUCH!

My not so small used trailer, 47000 lbs gross, cost just $62 for sales tax and forever registration in Va. Would have been cheaper for a lighter trailer. I didn"t complain.

Here in Tennessee you can still get the lifetime registration. I don't remember how much they cost but they aren't very expensive,$30-$40 seems like. I bought a new gooseneck a couple of years ago and I got one for it just so everything would be kosher.
